About Ashleigh
I was trained in classical hatha yoga, meditation, pranayama, anatomy, and vedic philosophy at a traditional ashram (Arhanta Yoga Ashram) in Madhya Pradesh, India in 2012. My experience there and this particular approach to yoga has since served as the foundation for my classes. The function of classical hatha yoga is to prepare the body for meditation, while also being a meditative practice in itself. A guiding principle is that one must control the body before gaining command over one's mind. My classes are designed to be therapeutic and intended to leave students with a sense of stillness, a calm mind, a relaxed body, and a keener awareness of themselves and their surroundings than before their session. The more one practices, the effects tend to accumulate and heighten with each session and last longer in the time in between.
Through initial consultation, I tailor each session and long-term plans to the student and their needs, goals, physical ability/limitations, and accomodate to specific requests. I tend to focus on classes aimed at relieving stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, as well as muscle tension and pain. I additionally give students resources such as information packets to allow them the opportunity to delve further into their practice if they so choose.
This fall, I will be taking a trauma-informed yoga course to further this concentration. In addition, I will be attending nursing school next year with the intent to focus on community health and HIV/AIDS, the latter being something that yoga has been shown (from studies published in peer-reviewed journals) to help those with the virus with various symptoms. My ultimate goal is to be a part of the already occurring integration of yoga into Western medicine and healthcare, not as a substitution but as a supplement and enhancement.
My goal is to offer students the tools that have helped and continue to help me, and to teach them how to use them so that ultimately they are able to continue to grow on their own. I focus on alleviating stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia because the practice of yoga and meditation, in addition to breathing (pranayama) and chanting, have been effective at least to the degree of lessening uncomfortable symptoms. I have also seen the relief it has given many, myself included, for easing the mind and also for those with back and neck pain as well. I enjoy being able to provide the option of yoga and meditation as a means for alleviating discomfort in the mind or body and I find satisfaction in knowing that they will always have the option to access them on their own.
I have had an RYT-200 certification since 2012 after training at Arhanta Yoga Ashram in Madhya Pradesh, India. In addition to being trained in classical hatha yoga, equally I was trained in meditation, pranayama, vedic philosophy, anatomy, and other related practices such as taking an ayurvedic workshop.
I additionally have a BA in political science, but for a majority of my college career I was a pre-med and biological anthropology student and thus have a solid knowledge of human biology, anatomy, as well as psychology. By the end of this year I will have been trained in trauma-informed yoga as well as in HIV/AIDS counseling. Nursing school is next on the list.

I begin with a thorough consultation that includes a questionnaire followed by discussion. After learning the needs, goals, physical ability, and level of experience of the student, I modify the lessons to encourage the fulfillment of those goals.
Aside from that, I tend to allow the student to guide how they want to experience each session and what they want to take away from it. I'm here to provide the resources to do so.
The types of students I work with are widely varied, however many are those with back and neck pain from either stress/tension or due to past injuries. I have also worked with those suffering from anxiety and depression as well as insomnia. I have also had students who are HIV+ and that have other chronic conditions for which yoga can help lessen the discomfort of.
