About Eliza
Hello! I am a violin teacher with over 4 years of dedicated teaching experience and more than 200 students taught across all ages and levels. My approach to violin teaching is shaped by extensive performing experience alongside years of careful study of violin pedagogy — the science and art of how violin playing is most effectively taught and learned. Combining both perspectives gives me a teaching approach that is both musically authentic and pedagogically rigorous. I teach the full range of violin students: young children in their first lessons, teenagers preparing for grade examinations and conservatory auditions, adult beginners, and experienced players seeking more advanced technical and musical guidance. I cover all areas of violin technique — bow technique, left-hand technique, intonation, tone production, vibrato, shifting, and advanced bowing — alongside music theory, sight reading, ear training, and the interpretive skills needed for musically expressive performance. What I find most rewarding about violin teaching is the moment when a student whose playing has been technically constrained discovers through our work together what the instrument is actually capable of — the sheer beauty of a well-produced violin tone, the emotional power of a phrase played with genuine musical intention. Creating that discovery, and building on it in every subsequent lesson, is what motivates everything I do.

I teach violin with a conviction that the instrument's technical demands, though real and significant, are not the primary challenge most students face. The primary challenge is developing the ear — the ability to hear one's own playing with genuine critical attention and use that hearing to guide continuous self-improvement. Students with well-developed ears make faster progress than students with good coordination, because the ear is what turns practice into learning rather than mere repetition.I develop this critical listening explicitly and consistently throughout all my teaching. I ask students to listen carefully to specific aspects of their playing — intonation, tone quality, rhythmic evenness, bow distribution — and I train them to hear the difference between what they intend to produce and what they actually produce. This training is what allows students to practise productively without me present, which is where most of the actual development happens.Alongside this ear training, I develop the technical foundations that give the ear something worth listening to: reliable intonation, a range of bow techniques that produce different tone qualities, clear articulation, vibrato when the student is ready for it, and the physical ease and efficiency that allow the instrument to be played sustainably over long practice sessions and performances. I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity examinations and for orchestral and chamber music playing.
