About Sheila
Have you ever had one of those days when you were singing, acting, dancing, or involved in some athletic endeavor, and for one brief moment, you experienced a higher level than ever before? This is the "Eureka!" moment we all long for as artists. Now our bodies have shown us a higher path. I have developed a process to create this experience vocally. It's what I call "hollowing the pipe", through deep breathing and resonating, which expand interior space (using the interior "yawn" to lift the soft palate and relax the larynx)...connecting with our breath support...and mentally verticalizing the resulting energy through the tops of our heads, with instant projection of high placed, forward, clear tone...it's what I call the "no walls-no ceiling" feeling. I have found it to be a totally exhilarating experience!
Thanks.....Sheila Barish
After much performing, one of my voice teachers told me that there was an opening for a voice teacher at Miami Dade College. I found that I was a natural teacher and loved the one-on-one experience.

Make sure to look around until you find someone whose advice you can trust, and with whom you have a very good rapport. I feel there must be a real connection in a one-on-one class for significant growth to take place.
I do an annual concert with several colleagues at a church in Coral Gables (whose acoustics are right out of heaven).....and we always end with "The Prayer". At this past June's concert, we were so in sync, that I felt like I was lifting up off the stage...very transcendent experience...
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Questions to the prospective teacher:
"How can you help me with a process that would sustain me, should I be cast in a musical with a long run? How can I preserve vocal health, even with nightly performances?"
"Do you emphasize vocal freedom, rather than trying to powerhouse my voice?"
"Can you help me smooth out my vocal transitions?"
