About Barbara

I am, to be honest, a very experienced writer and editor who has done tutoring in the past as well as taught a college seminar. I've also done a great deal of reviewing of performances and books, which is akin in many ways to tutoring because it uses evaluative skills that are insightful but also kind. As a writer and editor I'm considered accurate but passionate, able to transmit my love of words to others.

About the lesson

Before even meeting with the student -- probably virtually, in my case -- I would review my knowledge of the subject and be sure I'm up to snuff. I would also consider the personal attributes that. would make me a good tutor -- including empathy, patience, encouragement, and love of the subject(s). And not doing too much talking. During our first meeting, I would try to ask the student to articulate his or her goals and the purpose for seeking the help of a tutor. What his or her strengths and possible weaknesses. Then I would ask the student to do some reading and show me a few writing samples to go over.
