About Merlin
My name is Merlin and I just got an A* in both maths and physics A-level. I started teaching almost straight after my exams, enjoying keeping my brain moving without the pressure! I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed it. I found I was able to explain key, underlying concepts that held students back, in an understandable way - fully exploring them, instead of limiting the knowledge to what will help with an individual question (how we're taught at school). This limited method of teaching is necessary in a classroom, but moulds subjects into memory games, which just doesn't work for some people. Sharing with students the bigger picture - seeing them recognise how satisfying maths can be, is really fun. I believe that this approach to a subject is the best way to learn, putting you in good stead for your exam.

My lessons are informal and conversational, encouraging students to make the leaps of understanding for themselves, allowing for general and long-lasting change, rather than just a quick fix. I've found that with both A-level and GCSE students, the issue tends to simply be either gaps in knowledge, or a different way of thinking that a class teacher can't account for. Often it's just confidence. I can fill in gaps, adapt and personalise concepts, and nurture and expand comfort zones. I feel like I can provide help from a different perspective to their school teacher, having gone through these exams not so long ago. Lessons are typically 1 or 2 hours, and I can help with A-levels, GCSE's or general maths for any age.
