About Leslie
I am a licensed social worker who began my career after graduate school as a Child Protective Service worker. I came to believe that I would be more impactful if I switched from a reactive role to a proactive role. I began working as a teacher in Baltimore City, Maryland and obtained my Advanced Professional certification. After twelve years, I moved on to teaching in a private school; not because of the nature of students, but because of the fact that all of the bureaucratic rules made it virtually impossible to be productive as a teacher. I began as a fourth grade teacher, but after two years was able to focus on my passion; teaching Language Arts especially writing. I became the Lower School's Language Arts Coordinator and Language Arts specialist. In this role, I was able to teach students in first through fifth grade. This enabled me to gain insight into children's differing learning styles as they developed academically. I was fortunate enough to develop and implement my own curriculum using Lucy Calkin's Units of Study as a basis. Over the years, I came to realize that a teacher's role should be facilitator. If students were having difficulty, it was my role to try a different approach, a different avenue to disseminate information. I also believe that when students are given the opportunity to take responsibility for their work, they thrive. Due to a move to a different state, I am no longer able to teach at the school where I was teaching. I am not ready to give up my passion or forgo the smile on a student's face when they "get it".

As an experienced teacher, I have created and implemented lessons focusing on skills and concepts relevant in today's world. Students are currently twenty-first century learners; therefore, their education should be reflective of this. The most important thing for students to be able to do is apply what they have learned to new and unique situations. After providing lessons from which students gain a solid basic foundation, I facilitate the students' inherent desire to grow academically by respecting their ideas and fostering an environment that focuses on higher level and critical thinking. When students feel that they are valued for their thinking, they are willing to put forth effort for which they are proud. Their work is truly reflective of their abilities.
