Hi there! My name is Jake Morell and I am a Drummer. In 5th grade I started to play drums. I took lessons up until 7th grade, where I felt I was "okay" enough to go out on my own. In 6th/7th grade, I was asked to join my High School's Drumline/Marching Band, where I was the first middle schooler in our school district to play in the High School Marching Band. I went on to play in the marching band for 6 years, until I graduated High School. Meanwhile, I was also involved in concert band, and jazz band from grades 5-12. During my senior year of High School, I was voted "Most Musical" for my class.
In high school, I started a band with my friends where we had played close to 50 gigs throughout the NJ/PA/DE area, and competed in numerous contests. That band lasted for 2-3 years before college happened for all of us I am not involved currently in any concert bands at my college, but I do still play in a few bands on my own, outside of college.
I have done lessons off and on before, and the way I teach is not much through a book, and sheet music but rather more hands on demonstration (unless preferred or are learning concert percussion). That is the best way I learned myself, and have found is the most effective way after researching.
Students will learn the basics of drumming, and pick up skills fast while having fun and connecting it to their personal taste in music as well. After the basics, things will kick in gear where students will learn fills, techniques, different rhythms, dynamics, and more. Once students get to a comfortable point, I have them pick out a few songs that they personally like, to bring to each lesson to be taught how to play their favorite songs. I'm not a fan of having the instructor pave the WHOLE way for the student. Students will learn what they want to learn, after the basics are taught, and have gotten a feel for different types and styles of music. The main goal is for the student to have fun, and learn skills easy, and as naturally as possible.
