About John
I am a qualified mathematics teacher, with nearly 25 of experience teaching/tutoring in many different settings, but particularly with pupils with additional learning needs. I have taught mathematics (or worked as a supply teacher) in a few different schools in the area. However, these days I just focus on private tuition work. I tutor all ages and abilities of student, whether they are just beginning to visualise their times-tables, struggling with the different concept in GCSE mathematics, or wanting to develop their mathematical understanding at a higher level. My ‘other’ job is as a Careers Adviser (three days a week). The rest of the time I am a stay-at-home dad, and part-time Theology student. I also have a degree in Civil Engineering.

One-to-one tuition of mathematics is my passion! And I love getting alongside learners of any age and ability, sharing my enthusiasm for the topics at every level of the subject. Lessons are typically one hour long and can take place at the pupil’s home, the tutor’s home or a mutually agreed location (e.g. library). Each of my lessons is tailored to the individual needs of my students for that day. This could be help with a topic just done in school, general revision questions and topics, or pushing them on to new concepts coming up on their course syllabus. My calm approach gives the children, young people, and adults whom I teach a great confidence boost in a sometimes (unnecessarily) confusing subject. I believe everyone can achieve and grow in confidence in mathematics. I also believe that face-to-face, individual lessons are best for teaching mathematics, giving the student best chance to 'see' and understand the patterns and concepts being taught, and the tutor to ‘see’ how well the student is progressing in that understanding. Please note: I do not tutor for the 11+ or other school entrance tests.

Details
£40/hr is my rate for GCSE Foundation Level maths. My other rates are: Primary and KS3 £36, Higher GCSE £43, A-Level £48 and Further Maths £50.
Finally, there is no charge for travel if the lesson is within walking distance for me.
