I was Filiz’s final year project supervisor from October 2014 to March 2015 and taught her through lectures over her time at Essex University. She achieved a 1st class honours degree and during her time in my laboratory, Filiz has shown herself to be a highly motivated student. She undertook a project investigating the effects of alpha haemoglobin stabilising protein on the ligand binding properties of alpha haemoglobin. Filiz’s work involves techniques including bacterial cells culture, protein purification, spectroscopic and spectrokinetic analysis, techniques that she became proficient after some practice. She made excellent progress after quickly settling into the research lab environment and forming good working relationships with the staff and other students in the laboratory.
I regard Filiz to be a polite, responsible and conscientious researcher, and she is not afraid to ask questions and to seek clarification on laboratory procedures and data interpretation. Neither was Filiz afraid to explore more complex research techniques including laser flash photolysis. Filiz is a highly enthusiastic person and I am confident that Filiz has a promising future in research or whichever career path she takes.
