About Eoin
I studied mathematical sciences and went on to complete a PhD in general relativity before spending over a decade as a quantitative researcher, specialising in options pricing, data science and machine learning.
I have many years of tutoring experience at second and third level, and I'm patient, happy to go over something multiple times, and won't move on until you're comfortable. If we're mid-topic when the hour is up, I'll keep going until we reach a natural stopping point.
I grew up in a working class community where most of my peers didn't have access to the kind of academic support that makes a real difference. That experience shapes how I teach — I have genuine empathy for students who find mathematics difficult or who've been made to feel that it's not for them.

My sessions are guided rather than lecture-style — I'll ask questions to find exactly where your understanding breaks down, then work through the material with you rather than just showing you answers. I find that most mathematical difficulties trace back to one or two specific gaps, and once those are fixed things tend to click quickly.
I ask students to share their syllabus, lecture notes, or problem sheets before our first session so I can prepare properly. This means we spend our time together actually working through your difficulties rather than me reading the material cold.
When a concept isn't landing I'll try a different angle — a different notation, a geometric interpretation, a concrete example — until we find the explanation that works for you. Everyone's intuition is different and there's rarely just one way to understand something.
All sessions are held online via video call. This keeps things flexible for both of us and means location is never a constraint — I work with students across the UK.
If we're mid-way through a topic when the hour is up, I'm happy to keep going until we reach a natural stopping point. I'd rather finish the problem than leave you hanging.
