About Alisha

Teaching saxophone is about nurturing both the technical skills and artistic soul of each student. I start with fundamentals like posture, breath control, embouchure formation, and finger agility, establishing a healthy and effective approach to playing. I focus heavily on tone quality, articulation, and phrasing to help students develop their own musical voice. Music theory and ear training are introduced alongside practical repertoire and improvisation exercises to build comprehensive musicianship. Improvisation is a cornerstone of my teaching, and I guide students from simple call-and-response exercises to more complex melodic and rhythmic improvisations, building their confidence and creativity. Lessons are personalized to suit the individual interests and goals of each student, whether they want to master jazz standards, explore contemporary styles, or improve classical technique. I also incorporate digital tools like recording and playback software, slow-downer apps, and backing tracks to support practice and inspire creativity. One memorable teaching experience involved helping a student conquer their fear of performing, culminating in a confident live solo that marked a turning point in their musical journey. I strive to foster a welcoming and motivating space where students can grow into expressive, confident saxophonists who love making music.

Teaching saxophone is a rewarding endeavor that blends technical skill-building with creative expression, and my approach reflects this balance.

I focus first on core fundamentals such as breath control, embouchure, finger technique, articulation, tone production, and rhythm accuracy, ensuring students build a strong, healthy foundation. However, I also believe that music is a deeply personal form of expression, so I encourage improvisation, exploration of diverse styles, and development of individual phrasing and tone.

Each student’s lessons are personalized to reflect their musical interests, goals, and learning preferences—whether they’re passionate about jazz improvisation, classical repertoire, blues, or contemporary music. I incorporate music theory and ear training through practical, engaging exercises that deepen understanding and foster creative freedom. I leverage technology such as recording apps, metronomes, and backing tracks to enhance practice efficiency and self-assessment.

Performance experience is another crucial aspect; I support students in preparing for recitals, auditions, and ensemble playing to build confidence and poise. One of my most fulfilling experiences was helping a student with limited prior musical background develop into a confident performer with a distinct improvisational voice. Ultimately, I am committed to helping students develop technical mastery, creative independence, and a lifelong love of saxophone playing.
