About Melisa

Throughout my journey as a fashion illustration student and professional, I have experienced the immense joy and fulfilment that comes from creating art. This passion drives my desire to teach and share the knowledge and skills I have acquired with others. I believe that teaching allows me to contribute to the artistic community by nurturing new talent and fostering a deeper appreciation for the art of fashion illustration.

One of the most inspiring aspects of teaching is witnessing the growth and development of my students. There is a unique satisfaction in seeing a student progress from tentative first strokes to confident, expressive drawings. Each student brings their unique perspective and style, and I am inspired by their creativity and individuality. Teaching allows me to be part of their artistic journey, helping them overcome challenges, build their skills, and discover their artistic voice. Creating a supportive and engaging learning environment is my goal, where students feel confident, inspired, and empowered to take risks, experiment with new techniques, and develop their unique style.

As a fashion illustration graduate, my approach to tutoring life drawing focuses on practical skills development, creativity, and a deep understanding of human anatomy and fashion aesthetics. Here are the key components of my methodology:

Demonstration and Practice: I start each lesson with a demonstration, showing specific techniques and methods. Students then practice these techniques under my guidance, allowing them to learn by doing.

Step-by-Step Instruction: Breaking down the drawing process into manageable steps helps students grasp complex concepts. This might include understanding proportions, anatomy, movement, and fabric flow.

Observation and Feedback: I emphasise the importance of observation, encouraging students to study live models carefully. I provide constructive feedback to help them improve their skills continuously.

Incorporating Fashion Elements: I integrate fashion-specific elements such as drapery, texture, and garment construction into life drawing to ensure students can translate basic drawing skills into fashion illustrations.

Encouraging Individual Style: While teaching fundamental techniques, I also encourage students to develop their unique style, fostering creativity and personal expression.

Use of Various Media: Introducing students to different drawing materials and tools, such as charcoal, pencils, ink, and digital tools, helps them discover what works best for their style and enhances their versatility.

Typical Length of a Lesson
Each lesson typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours. This timeframe is sufficient for covering new techniques, practicing with a live model, and receiving feedback without overwhelming the students. Here's a possible structure for a 1.5-hour session:

10 minutes: Introduction and demonstration of the day's technique.
50 minutes: Practice session with a live model, with ongoing feedback.
20 minutes: Focused critique and individual feedback.
10 minutes: Q&A and summary of key points learned.
Qualifications and Experience
Educational Background: I hold a degree in fashion illustration, which has provided me with a solid foundation in both artistic techniques and fashion design principles.

Professional Experience: Although I am relatively new to teaching, my professional experience includes working on various fashion illustration projects, which keeps my skills relevant and up-to-date.

Continuous Learning: I am committed to ongoing professional development, attending workshops, and engaging with the fashion and art community to stay informed about the latest trends and techniques.

Target Audience
My lessons are designed for a variety of learners, including:

Level: Beginners to intermediate students who are interested in improving their life drawing skills, particularly with a focus on fashion illustration.

Age: Typically aimed at young adults (16+) and adults who have an interest in fashion and art.

Learning Goals: Students looking to enhance their portfolio, prepare for fashion or art school, or simply improve their drawing skills for personal or professional development.

In summary, my tutoring approach in life drawing is hands-on, technique-focused, and tailored to incorporate fashion illustration elements, aiming to equip students with both the technical skills and creative confidence to excel in their artistic endeavours.
