About Charniya
Playing music across the American South for 13 years has shaped my ear. I am a traditionalist. My formal study at Berea College resulted in a BA Folk Music degree which solidified my academic grounding in these styles.
I teach violin through the oral tradition rather than relying on paper. My focus remains on the groove and the raw sound of the tune. Shifts in position and bowing technique become natural movements rather than rigid exercises. I emphasize posture and left hand agility for every student.
Intonation is improved by listening rather than staring at pages. I provide a relaxed space for hobbyists and professionals to grow.

Sometimes the best way to learn is to put the music stand away entirely. I invite you to join me in playing tunes that have lasted for over 13 years. We focus on tuning by ear as the primary way to understand your instrument.
Classical repertoire is treated with the same rhythmic attention as old time breakdowns. You will find that our time together feels like a front porch jam session.
I enjoy seeing returning learners gain confidence in their own ears. It is incredibly satisfying to hear a new melody come to life through your fingers. We keep things light and focused on the sound.
