About Emily
I'm a fifth year chemical engineering student studying at the University of Birmingham. I love tutoring and have done so throughout high school, college and university. I have most recently finished a year work placement with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and tutored alongside my job in person with students from the local area. I tutor a range of subjects at different levels, from the sciences and Maths, to English, all subjects which I have achieved high grades for in both GCSE and A Level.
I love helping others get to that 'AHA' moment where something finally clicks for them. The satisfaction and pride I feel when I see and help someone successfully jump over another hurdle is a very unique feeling. I have experience mentoring students who suffer from dyslexia and dyscalculia and have developed the ability to identify and adapt my teaching using different learning styles that suit the individual.
Many students of all ages and abilities will be feeling like they need some extra help to maintain their grades with lockdown and coronavirus, or even just someone to provide them with some extra learning. This is normal and expected so please get in touch, no matter your ability or confidence and I promise I will help you.

I gather example questions and develop multiple methods of explaining the questions, spotting potential areas for errors. Often, a student doesn’t understanding a basic principle behind a question so we will work backwards to solidify this knowledge before progressing onto harder content.
I measure progress by the consistency of a student to correctly understand and answer questions on the topic. Once a student can consecutively answer a style or content of questions, they are then ready to move on. I place a big emphasis on confidence with the topic. I won’t move onto the next topic until they feel fully confident in their own abilities.
Constant reassurance is important to encourage learning. I like to emphasise that no answer is silly; a wrong answer is just one that needs developing. A student will often learn more from getting an answer wrong and working through the reasons why it is not correct than immediately getting it right. Wrongfully answering initially develops a deeper understanding to gain the correct answer and why. If they are correct the first time, we will go through more questions to ensure a full understanding.
I need to know whether the goal is to pass an exam, gain a certain grade or to become more confident with content. If the intention is to pass an exam, practicing the base topics repeatedly until the student is confident is usually best. However, all lessons are tailored to the student and their needs.
