About Jacob
I am a final-year French and Italian BA student at Cardiff University. As part of my degree, I recently completed a year abroad, spending one semester studying at Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 in France and another at the Università di Pisa in Italy. Living and studying in both countries has given me first-hand experience of the language, culture and everyday life that I enjoy sharing with my students.
My passion for modern foreign languages began at school, where French quickly became my favourite subject. That enthusiasm inspired me to continue studying it at university, and I love helping others build their confidence and discover that learning a language can be both rewarding and enjoyable.
Outside of languages, I enjoy music, tennis, keeping up with current affairs and popular culture, and I've recently been trying to master chess (which is proving to be much harder than I expected!) I believe having a range of interests helps lessons feel more relaxed and conversational, making it easier for students to practise French in a natural way.

My lessons are tailored to each student's goals, whether they're preparing for exams, learning French for travel, or simply looking to improve their confidence. I aim to create a relaxed, supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as this is an essential part of language learning.
I use an interactive teaching style that combines conversation, grammar, vocabulary and authentic materials. Where appropriate, I like to incorporate current events, news articles and aspects of French culture so that students can see how the language is used in real-life contexts and gain a deeper understanding of the Francophone world.
Alongside speaking practice, I place a strong emphasis on regularly revisiting grammar and vocabulary to reinforce learning and ensure steady progress. Lessons are adapted to each student's pace and learning style, with plenty of opportunities to practise and receive constructive feedback.
Sessions are flexible and typically last between one and two hours, depending on the student's preferences, age and concentration.
As a final-year French and Italian student at Cardiff University who has studied in France, I teach beginner to intermediate learners, including school pupils preparing for GCSE or A-level examinations, university beginners, and adult learners wishing to develop their French for travel, work or personal interest.

Details
My standard tuition fee is £25 per hour for one-to-one lessons.
I also offer small-group tuition (2–5 students) at £15 per student, per hour. Learning with friends can be a great way to build confidence and practise conversational French while keeping costs lower for everyone.
