About Hannah

My name is Hannah and I’m 21 years old. I’m in the final year of my degree (BA German and Spanish) at UCL. My hobbies include playing football, reading and travelling.
I have experience tutoring Spanish and German, as well as my native language, English, and I believe through these I have gained a deep understanding of the languages themselves and of the teaching methodologies that work.
The reason I am passionate about teaching is because there’s nothing better than watching students finally understand a concept they struggled with and gaining confidence. I really love to see my students make themselves proud and that is my goal as a tutor.
I also know what a huge impact certain teachers in my own education have had on my life and the path I have taken, and I want to give that back to others.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is first and foremost to make classes as fun and engaging as possible. I know that the way languages are taught at school often consists of rote learning, which feels like a chore and discourages a lot of students from studying. I think that is a real shame because languages are portals through which you can understand different cultures and connect with people with totally different lives to yourself. Having just completed my Year Abroad in Mexico and Germany, I can attest to how much languages have enriched my life and made me a more open-minded person.
In sixth form, I had a really amazing German teacher who wove songs, games, fun facts, and traditions into our lessons and not only did it make us engage in the class, it also made the grammatical points and vocab we learnt much more memorable.
My approach to teaching is modelled on that teacher’s but more individualised. First, I like to go through the student’s curriculum for their exam board and identify the areas they struggle with, whether this is understanding a particular grammar point, or more general like retaining vocabulary, or gaining confidence for the speaking exam. Then, we go over these areas together and try new and engaging techniques until it clicks for them.
I also believe immersion is the best thing for language learning, so I am very happy to lead the lesson in the target language if the student wishes. I also have lots of podcast, music and TV recommendations for outside the classroom that I found really helped me with the speaking and listening parts of the exam.
