About Ben

I'm a strategy and finance professional with over a decade of experience across consulting, government, and private sector organisations in Australia and the UK. My career has involved complex problem solving, clear communication, and breaking down difficult concepts for a wide range of audiences - skills that translate directly into good teaching.

Alongside my professional career, I completed a Mathematics degree with the Open University. I am also half-Italian, lived in Italy for four years, and spent that time immersed in music study and composing, experiences that inform both my teaching and my understanding of language and culture in a way that goes well beyond the classroom.

I have been teaching students since I was 19, which means I bring over a decade of hands-on tutoring experience to every session. That breadth of experience, spanning different subjects, ages, backgrounds, and learning styles, has made me a genuinely flexible and adaptable teacher. I am not wedded to one approach. If the conventional explanation is not landing, I will find another way in, often from an unexpected angle, until something clicks.

I came to several of my own areas of expertise the long way round. Not through natural talent, but through curiosity and persistence. That background gives me real empathy for students who find a subject difficult, and a deep conviction that the right explanation at the right time can change everything.

About the lesson

I'll be honest... I wasn't a natural mathematician. I didn't even study Maths at A-Level.

But after years of using it professionally in finance and strategy, I went back and completed a Mathematics degree, studying full-time alongside a full-time job. That experience taught me that maths isn't something you either "get" or you don't. It's about finding the right explanation at the right time, and having the patience to keep looking until you find it.

That's what I bring to every session.

My approach is flexible: structured and exam-focused when you need to nail technique, or more conversational when the goal is genuine understanding. I adapt to what the student needs on the day. Lessons are typically one hour via video call, and I usually recommend weekly sessions to build momentum.
I'm particularly effective with students who've lost confidence, fallen behind, or just need someone to slow down and explain things properly.

I teach Primary (KS1–KS2), Secondary (KS3–KS4 / GCSE), and A-Level Maths.
