Popea is a respected tutor in our community. They have been highly recommended for their commitment and the quality of their lessons — an excellent choice to progress with confidence.

About Popea

I want my students to have fun with making, and view the tutoring as a valuable addition to the development of their imagination. I want them to come away from a session with new ideas and perspectives which they can confidently take back to the classroom, continue to think outside of the box and step outside of their comfort zones.

I have over 6 years of experience in assisting and facilitating a range of creative programmes and activities with young children from underprivileged backgrounds. This community-based project work began before I started university, and continued throughout my time at UAL. I have since then utilised my creative skillset in social care work for a local London organisation, providing a creative programme for children from underprivileged families who are currently going through legal processes with social services.

Aside from the practical teaching, I believe my empathy, open-mindedness and natural imagination makes me a warm-mannered and approachable tutor. I am a people's person, so that is why I believe I can teach across generations, as well as abilities.

I have led various skills-specific arts programmes and clubs in ceramics, collage, creative writing & poetry, drawing, photography and art as activism.

I have taught young children from ages 6-13 how to manipulate clay, plasticine, how to use stop motion animation. I have built lessons around experimenting with texture, light/shadow, scale, pattern, nature, objects, still life, space.

Coming from a working-class background, I have grounded my creative practice in the importance of sharing skills and view artmaking as a space for honest conversation in order to build confidence through your passion. To embrace it and not fear it.

BA Hons Fine Art: Drawing (2:1) - University of the Arts London, Camberwell College 2023.

Tier 1: Primary (ages 6-12)
Tier 2: Secondary (ages 13-15)
Tier 3: GCSE (16+)
Tier 4: A-Level and Foundation prep (16-18)

*** I also offer 4-1 online sessions for Tier 2 and up. ***

For all Tiers, sessions will be minimum 1 hour as standard.

Tiers 3 and 4 - for maximum retention and to get the most out of the session, I would recommend a minimum of 2 hours per session (1 hour practical and 1 hour theory/context/applications).

My work with Tiers 1 and 2 is skills-based and focuses on enhancing/improving their learning around their school's specific curriculum, building confidence and instilling fun into making early on. We focus on a set programme of activities to embellish what they are already learning at school, and provide them with new and exciting opportunities to try new materials they may not have access to at school.

I apply my own school learning into my lessons, inspired by the techniques, advice and activities my own art teachers used at GCSE, A-level and Degree level.

Working with a range of abilities and ages, I tailor my lessons based on the needs of my students and where they are in their creative journeys. I see myself as a creative mentor as well as a teacher and I believe that young artists, especially those preparing for higher education, need to be more prepared and well-informed than ever before.

Depending on the frequency, the first 10/15 minutes of a session will be an opportunity to touch base on skills they would like to improve/concerns they are currently having. We will then commence the session and continue with an open-minded/conversational approach throughout.

I provide firm, fair and open-minded support for students who are preparing for their GCSEs or A-levels. I provide specific 1-1 support for students who need extra support fine-tuning their practical skills, feedback on their projects ideas, portfolio advice, resource suggestions, personal statements, University advice.

Travel costs: I am open to in-person home learning sessions. I am willing to travel across various locations in London zones 1-4. Travel will typically cost around £10 on top of the session total.

Additional materials and resources: Depending on the focus of our sessions, there may be a need for additional materials and art resources which will enhance the learning taking place.
This is open for discussion and is dependent on your budget! My practice is rooted in making art accessible, so I always endeavour to make art sessions as affordable as possible. As long as the learning is taking place, we will always find a way!

Trips: Another aspect of our learning may be to take tailored art gallery trips to enhance my student's wider contextual knowledge. Galleries can be daunting and often inaccessible spaces, however the only way to truly improve your art is to absorb as much inspiration as possible.
Logistics are open for discussion but I find that providing unique, interactive spaces for learning engage students more.
