About Janelle

Hi, I’m Janelle! I’m a recent First-Class Biological and Forensic Science graduate, with a genuine passion for Biology and experience tutoring students from primary level through to GCSE and A-Level.

I found Biology challenging as a GCSE student, but I was also fascinated by it — particularly human anatomy and how our cells work. Because I genuinely wanted to understand the subject, I started putting in extra work outside of lessons: watching videos, revising in different ways and attending additional support sessions. I still remember getting my first decent mock results and realising, “I can actually do this.” I went on to achieve a 7-7 in GCSE Combined Science and later an A in A-Level Biology.

It wasn’t always easy, especially while balancing Biology alongside my other subjects, which is why I understand how frustrating it can feel when a subject doesn’t immediately click.

I went on to study Biological and Forensic Science at university, continuing to develop as a scientist through academic study, practical laboratory work and a year-long industrial placement in a forensic laboratory. Throughout my studies, I also developed a strong understanding of exam technique and how to use mark schemes effectively, learning how to approach questions so that I wasn't caught off guard by their wording.

As a visual learner myself, I know there isn't one way to learn Biology. Sometimes a concept needs to be explained differently, visualised, practised through questions or broken down into smaller, more manageable parts.

That’s the approach I bring to my tutoring. I want to help students understand Biology rather than simply memorise it, build their confidence and realise that the subject doesn't have to feel as difficult as it first seems.

And yes — there are definitely ways to “hack” the mark scheme!

About the lesson

I tailor each lesson to the individual student's needs, focusing on building understanding, confidence and exam technique. Lessons are structured around the topics the student finds most challenging, using clear explanations, PowerPoint presentations, worked examples and exam-style questions.

I place particular emphasis on mark-scheme technique, helping students understand how to apply their knowledge and structure answers effectively to maximise their marks. Where appropriate, I also provide homework and additional practice to reinforce learning between lessons.

Lesson format:

Level: GCSE & A-Level Biology
Typical lesson: 1 hour
Format: Online or classroom-based
Approach: Tailored to each student's needs and current level
Resources: PowerPoints, exam-style questions, mark-scheme guidance and homework
Experience: Previous experience tutoring students from primary level through to GCSE and A-Level, both online and in classroom settings

I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, working through difficult topics and building their confidence in Biology.
