About Jessica

I am a writer, poet and tutor with passions for language, literature and learning. I have an outstanding academic track record, including a first-class honours BA from Durham University in English and Spanish and a distinction-grade PGCert in Teaching Creative Writing from the University of Cambridge. I attained 9 A* grades at GCSE and A* (English Literature), A (Philosophy), A (French), A (Spanish) at A-Level.

My academic achievements are complemented by extensive professional experience in teaching, youth work and creative writing workshop facilitation for adults - all of which have helped me to develop a range of interpersonal skills. As well as having nine years of tutoring experience, I have spent a year working as an SEN teaching assistant for 11-16-year-olds at Wren Academy during the pandemic. I progressed from this role to working as a personal mentor for older teenagers in foster care at Barnet Council from 2021-2023. I currently am employed as a part-time outreach and support worker for young adults at the Centre for Better Health in Hackney.

My passion for creative writing has led me to devise and deliver poetry workshops for adults in diverse settings, predominantly at charities offering creative education for vulnerable and marginalised groups. I have facilitated workshops at Freedom From Torture, The Pret Foundation and Green Shoes Arts, as well as other charities, libraries and schools. I am committed to fostering inclusive and supportive spaces for people to develop enthusiasm, confidence and passion around their ability to write, while also building new community connections.

I have self-published two poetry books, had articles and academic essays published in diverse magazines, newspapers and journals, and performed spoken word at venues across London and in Thailand. When teaching both children and adults, I combine knowledge of literature and language gleaned in academic environments with an awareness of contemporary evolution in literary forms, including performance poetry.

I adopt a student-centred approach and am passionate about supporting learners to develop inspiration, confidence and understanding. I have been tutoring GCSE and A-Level English, French and Spanish for over 8 years, and teaching creative writing to adults since 2020. As well as having a first-class honours degree in English and Spanish from Durham University, I have attained grade distinction in a PGCert in Teaching Creative Writing from the University of Cambridge. My professional experience as a mentor and mental health support worker has also equipped me with excellent pastoral and interpersonal skills, which are an asset when getting to know your individual needs and learning style and help you to overcome challenges. I offer lessons to GCSE, A-Level and undergraduate students, as well as for adults. My lessons last 1 hour.
