About Bilal

Hi, I’m Bilal. I’m easy-going, sociable and approachable, and I want you to feel comfortable being yourself from the start.

A big reason I want to teach is because I know what it feels like to underperform. I was the lazy student who did not fully realise what I was capable of until much later. Once I changed how I studied, wrote and approached assessments, my results changed with it. That experience gave me a real passion for helping students recognise their own potential earlier than I did.

Outside of Law, I’m a big football fan, enjoy travelling, keeping fit and following current affairs. I also genuinely enjoy meeting new people, debating ideas and helping others build confidence.

I take your progress seriously, but I do not think learning needs to feel stiff or intimidating. You should feel comfortable asking questions, challenging ideas and admitting when something makes absolutely no sense. Law is difficult enough without pretending we understand everything the first time.

About the lesson

You might know the law, know the cases and still wonder why your marks are not showing what you are actually capable of. I know that feeling because I have been through the frustrating essays, disappointing marks and exam stress myself. Over time, I learnt how to approach questions properly, structure my writing, develop stronger arguments and think much more critically about the law.

That journey eventually took me to a First-Class Law degree, a Distinction LLM and now my current role as a Trainee Solicitor.

That experience is a huge part of how I will teach you.

I am easy-going, personable and highly engaging, and I want you to actually enjoy our lessons. You are not going to spend two hours listening to me read from a PowerPoint or repeat information you could find in a textbook. I want to get to know you, understand how you think, find out what you are struggling with and work out why you might be losing marks.

My biggest strengths are legal writing, essay structure, critical analysis and exam technique.

Knowing the law is only part of doing well in Law. You also need to know what the question is really asking you, which material matters, how to structure your answer, how to use cases and authority properly, how to build a persuasive argument and, crucially, how to move from simply describing the law to actually analysing it.

That is where we will spend a lot of our time.

I also do not believe in spoon-feeding you. If you give me an answer, I am probably going to ask you why. If you make an argument, I might challenge it. If you are convinced one side is right, I might ask you to argue the opposite position.

That is deliberate.

I want you to be able to question what you are learning, defend your reasoning and understand why an answer works rather than simply memorising one. If you can explain a legal principle, challenge it and apply it confidently, you have genuinely understood it. That kind of critical thinking will help you enormously in essays and exams, but it is also one of the most important skills you can develop if you are considering a career in law.

You will also get something slightly different from me because I am currently living and working in the legal world as a Trainee Solicitor.

The skills you are developing now are not just things examiners want to see. I use legal research, drafting, case analysis, argument and application in my professional work. My current role involves working on live civil claims, reviewing evidence and disclosure, drafting legal correspondence and developing arguments. Your lessons will be practical and interactive. Depending on what you need, we might break down an essay question, build a plan together, improve a paragraph, tackle a problem question, analyse a past paper, review teacher or lecturer feedback, work through cases or put you under a little bit of timed pressure.

You will have a go yourself, we will discuss what worked, what did not and why, and then you will get clear feedback on what you should change next time.

Where possible, I prefer two-hour lessons. I find that this gives you the most value because we have enough time to properly understand something, practise it through activities, let you attempt it independently and then go through meaningful feedback without rushing everything into the final five minutes. One-hour lessons are absolutely possible where they suit you better, but two hours gives us much more room to properly work.

Before we start, I also want to get to know you.

I will want to understand your course or exam board, your current grade, the grade you are aiming for, what assessments you have coming up and what you personally find difficult. If you have previous work and feedback, even better. Sometimes the problem is not that you “do not know enough law” at all. You might understand the content but struggle with structure, application, analysis, timing or knowing what the examiner actually wants from you.

I have also previously supported first-year university students through mentoring, so I particularly enjoy helping students who are still finding their feet, making the transition to more advanced legal study or simply know that they are capable of more but are not yet sure how to show it.

Most importantly, I want you to become less dependent on me as you improve.

I want you to leave our lessons understanding not only what a strong legal answer looks like, but why it works and how you can produce one yourself.

If you finish our lessons thinking more critically, writing more confidently, understanding what examiners are looking for and feeling much more in control when you see a Law question, then we have done our job.
