About Joel
Hi! I’m Joel, and I’ve been playing piano for over 10 years. In 2024, I graduated with a first-class degree in Music from the University of York, where I had the privilege of studying under world-renowned concert pianist Jakob Fichert. This experience has shaped my teaching methods, and I’m excited to pass on his insights and my own expertise to help you become the best musician you can be.
With 2 years of teaching experience and 3 years of accompanying work, I’ve developed a tailored approach to piano lessons that focuses on building technical skills, musicality, and performance confidence. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student, I can adapt my teaching to suit your individual needs and goals.
When I’m not playing the piano, I enjoy climbing, playing badminton, and backpacking in the Lake District. I’m also a fan of anime, but my all-time favorite film is How to Train Your Dragon — a special memory from seeing it in theaters with my mum!
I’m passionate about teaching because of what music has given me. It’s a huge part of my daily life, and I want to share that joy with others. Learning music not only improves brain function but also provides a rewarding sense of achievement, and a deeper understanding of your own emotions. Every lesson is an opportunity to discover new things about both music and myself, and I love building connections with my students along the way.

A Typical Piano Lesson with Me
- 30 minutes to 1 hour in length
- I style the lesson around you! I will suggest pieces and solutions that I think are suitable, but I always want the student to have the final say.
- My usual structure involves a warmup, where we gently get our brains into gear and warm up the hands ready to play properly
- We will then move on to playing through what you've worked on since we last met, and work through any problems or tricky parts. I'll give you ways to practice these sections, so that you can work on them effectively when we're apart!
- At the end of the lesson, I'll set some goals to aim for so that we can keep progress high and reach your dream pieces!

Joel is a very trustworthy tutor! I met Joel whilst he was studying music at the University of York. He was dedicated to his own learning but also the teaching of others. He balanced his degree alongside tutoring many students all with different aims. His patience, kindness, and love for the piano shines through in his teaching. I would recommend Joel to anyone learning piano whether you are studying it for GCSE or want to start from scratch!
