About Jake

I am currently a first year mathematics student at the University of Warwick, at GCSE I achieved 9s in maths and further maths and at A-level I got A*s in maths and further maths. I am no stranger to aiming for top grades and I'm all too familiar with the experience of spending hours filling in the smallest of gaps to ensure the best mark possible so if you're a student aiming for 100% I know exactly how you feel and can push you to achieve it. Despite all this I must confess that my passion truly lies with tutoring those who don't have an easy time with maths (which is why my teaching philosophy prioritises working on the basics so heavily). To see someone's confidence grow and their appreciation for the subject blossom is an amazing thing and it was seeing this in a year 12 student I tutored in year 13 that made me realise how much I enjoy teaching others. Since I only came to love tutoring a year ago I have no formal experience but I hope my dedication and passion can make up for that, I hope to see you soon!

About the lesson

To successfully tackle difficult maths problems one must be able to give the question their full attention, when a mastery of basic concepts is achieved and typical operations can be carried out without even thinking the mind is free to focus on the details of complex or unfamiliar problems giving the student a far better chance of success. For this reason I believe a student should be given the chance to really internalise the fundamental ideas in the topic they are learning before moving on to harder problems, this also builds a lot of confidence since the student is completely confident in their skills. For students who have done this, practice on exam style questions and past papers will be far more rewarding since they can make the most of the questions. This idea informs the style of my lessons which aim to build confidence in the student by targeting any areas they are unsure on and only then throwing them into the deep end where they will soon come to see just how much they've improved.
