About Tess

Hi, I'm Tess! I recently graduated from Durham University with a degree in Physics and have several years of experience tutoring math and physics, as well as extensive experience working with children of different ages.

Irish has been a big part of my life and education. I was educated through Irish from primary school onwards and spent all five years of secondary school at an Irish-speaking boarding school in the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht. This gave me the opportunity to use Irish every day and develop a real fluency and love for the language.

I would love to help students feel more confident with Irish. I know that it can sometimes feel like a difficult subject when it is approached purely through textbooks, grammar and exam preparation, and I really enjoy helping people see it as a language they can actually speak and use. At the same time, having been through the Irish school system myself, I understand that achieving a strong exam result is often the priority, and I'm equally happy to help students work towards that.

Through my previous tutoring and childcare experience, I've learned the importance of being patient, approachable and adapting to the individual. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and telling me when they don't understand something. Whether someone wants to improve their exam performance, become more confident speaking Irish or simply enjoy the language a little more, I'd love to help.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is patient, encouraging and tailored to each student's needs and confidence level. I think it's particularly important when learning Irish to feel comfortable speaking the language and making mistakes, rather than worrying about getting everything right straight away. I aim to make lessons engaging, while still focusing on progress.

I offer online Irish lessons for students of all levels, from primary school through to Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate. Lessons can cover grammar, reading, writing, listening comprehension, exam technique and oral Irish, depending on what the student needs most. For Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert students, I am very happy to focus lessons specifically around the curriculum and exam preparation, working on the areas where they can make the biggest improvements.

Oral Irish is a particular strength and something I really enjoy teaching. I can provide structured Leaving Cert oral preparation, including practising the different sections of the exam, improving answers, correcting mistakes and building vocabulary, while also encouraging more natural conversation in Irish.

I am a fully fluent Irish speaker and was educated through Irish at both primary and secondary level. I spent five years attending boarding school in the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht and achieved a H1 in Leaving Certificate Irish in 2021, including full marks in my oral exam. Having gone through the Leaving Cert myself, I understand the importance of knowing how to approach the exam effectively. I also have previous tutoring experience and extensive experience working with children of different ages.

For students who are less exam-focused, I would also love to offer conversational Irish lessons. These can be more relaxed and centred around developing vocabulary, fluency and confidence through actually using the language rather than following a rigid exam structure. For younger children, lessons can be more interactive, using conversation, activities and games to make Irish enjoyable and accessible.

Lessons are between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the student's age, level and goals. Whether a student wants focused exam preparation, help with a particular area of the curriculum, regular support throughout the school year, or simply greater confidence speaking Irish, I will tailor the lessons to what they want to achieve.
