About Jess

Hello! I specialise in tutoring foreign languages and speak fluent English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Malay, and Bahasa Indonesia, with beginner proficiency in Japanese and French. With a passion for the arts, my hobbies and education have always revolved around this field, bringing creativity and cultural insights into my teaching. I’ve lived in the UK for 8 years and, alongside my career as a Chartered Accountant (ACA), I’ve taught over 10 students, many of whom have achieved A* in their GCSE Chinese exams. My love for sharing the Chinese language has grown over the years, and I focus on making language learning both enjoyable and immersive. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to improve, I can help you learn up to 100 Chinese characters in just 3 months, giving you the foundation to hold basic conversations and measure progress in a structured way. My approach is tailored to each student's goals—whether you are aiming for fluency, preparing for exams, (GCSE and A-levels) or simply want to enhance your conversational skills. (as an expat) I use real-life scenarios and cultural insights to bring the language to life, helping students not just learn vocabulary and grammar but truly understand the context and history behind what they’re studying. I aim to make every lesson engaging, practical, and suited to your individual learning needs. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced learner, I will guide you to reach your full potential in Mandarin, or Cantonese.

About the lesson

Writing is one of the four core language skills, and Chinese characters can be especially challenging for learners due to their pictographic nature. I have developed a unique approach to help students not only memorise new vocabulary but also understand the origin and structure of each character, making the learning process more intuitive and memorable. I explain the roots of characters and their evolution in a clear, relatable way, often drawing connections with meanings across different languages. With a strong passion for the history of language, I bring fascinating insights into the lessons, ensuring that each class is not only informative but also engaging and enjoyable. This deeper understanding will enrich your learning experience and help you appreciate the cultural significance behind the language. As part of your lesson you'll be taught: 1. Introduction to Phonetics and Tones 2. Basic Vocabulary and Characters Learn essential everyday vocabulary and high-frequency characters. Introduce the structure of Chinese characters, breaking down radicals and components. (how to write the correct strokes) 3. Building simple sentence structures 4. Recommendations of my favourite Cantonese movies and Chinese songs so you can practise at home. Lesson duration: 1-2 times per week

Perfect! Jess is what she says she is and more. As soon as I sat down I was immediately engaged. The material for the lesson was ready. The lesson was conducted with professionalism, with a hint of casual flair. Able to adapt to my level at ease, without any judgemental attitude. Jess was able to make notes and feed back on the same day, electronically so i can read it anywhere. There was work material for the following week. Jess seems to have a deeper understanding what it is that I require. That's just the first lesson.
