About Jake

I have been giving personalized lessons and tutoring for 5 years. I have taught hundreds of students in my experience as a mathematics educator. Plenty of students have been helped by me to get from failing to passing grades, resulting in high school diplomas, and even a few college degrees. I have been a tutor both publicly and privately, as well as a part time public school teacher.

I am a Mathematics college graduate who is passionate about education and has vast experience in secondary mathematics education.
I use segmenting as a teaching method. I start by asking the student what they know. Based off of their background knowledge, I show an example myself, highlighting the steps as I go, while putting emphasis on the steps that the student had trouble explaining. I then work with the student to create a numbered list of the steps necessary to complete the given type of problem. After this, I will encourage the student to use the list that we created to solve the problem on their own. In this, I try to be as hands off as possible as they tackle this problem on their own.
My methodology is that you need to trust in the skills that the student has. Never invite doubt into the equation, because when you doubt the student, it turns them off to the learning. Depending on the type of problem, repetition is important, however, this is not always applicable.
