About Oscar

I am a chess tutor and recent graduate with 6+ years of coaching experience, a peak ECF rating of 2100+ (2400+ online), and 15+ years of competitive chess experience, including as a former England junior. I have coached both children and adults, online and in person, and worked with groups and in schools. I am an accredited Chess in Schools and Communities coach, having worked in primary and secondary schools.

I have extensive formal teacher training experience, including the first stage of a PGCE and a CELTA qualification.

I also have teaching experience in other subjects, as I worked for over two years in schools, have taught English to children and adults, and have taught maths at a range of levels and abilities.

About the lesson

I tailor each lesson to your level, goals and preferences. I am able to teach a range of abilities, from complete beginners to strong club players.

My main goal is to help students develop an effective thought process for chess, focusing on calculation habits, evaluating positions, recognising patterns and understanding positional principles- the foundations of strong, practical chess.

Intermediate & Advanced Players: We begin with a deep analysis of your recent games to pinpoint exact areas for improvement. From there, we build comprehensive understanding using thematic games, advanced studies, and targeted, intense tactics training.

Beginners: I use a structured, engaging curriculum that guides you step-by-step through the basics. You will quickly build a solid foundation using lots of puzzles, fun minigames, and guided practice sessions.

Perfect! Oscar is really friendly and approachable and a lovely guy. And more importantly an excellent teacher - he very quickly established my level and identified how to challenge me, without simply giving mindless drills I'm actually learning the reasons behind my moves.
