About Kathleen
I love making learning fun and personal to your interests! As a former fifth-grade teacher with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education, I bring both professional training and real classroom experience to every tutoring session. I also hold reading endorsements and specialize in evidence-based literacy instruction.
I understand that every child learns differently. My background in special education allows me to tailor instruction to meet each student’s unique strengths and challenges. Whether a child needs foundational phonics support, reading comprehension strategies, or a confidence boost, I provide structured, patient, and individualized guidance.
Families can expect professionalism, clear communication, and consistent progress monitoring. I am committed to creating a supportive learning environment where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and grow. My goal is not only to strengthen academic skills, but also to build lasting confidence and independence in learners.

Teaching Method & Techniques
My teaching approach is structured, engaging, and tailored to each child’s unique learning style. With a background in Early Childhood and Special Education, I use research-based literacy strategies rooted in the Science of Reading.
I focus on:
Explicit, systematic phonics instruction
Phonemic awareness development
Guided oral reading for fluency
Vocabulary building and comprehension strategies
Multisensory techniques to support diverse learners
Scaffolded instruction with gradual release (“I do, We do, You do”)
I continuously assess student progress and adjust instruction to ensure growth, confidence, and mastery.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Each session is structured yet flexible based on the student’s needs. A typical reading lesson may include:
Warm-Up (5–10 minutes)
Review of previously taught skills (phonics patterns, sight words, fluency practice)
Skill Focus (15–20 minutes)
Direct instruction of a targeted skill (e.g., vowel teams, decoding strategies, comprehension strategy)
Guided Practice (10–15 minutes)
Reading connected text and applying the skill with support
Independent Practice (5–10 minutes)
Student demonstrates understanding through reading, writing, or word work
Wrap-Up & Progress Check
Quick assessment and discussion of growth and next steps
Lessons are interactive and designed to build both skill and confidence.
