About Val
Currently a designer in transportation infrastructure in New York City, since 2018, I have worked on hospitality projects, museums, and civic buildings in Japan, China, Italy, France, and the US. From 2022 to 2025, I worked as an instructor at Columbia GSAPP and Decolonise Architecture.
Prior to 2018, I worked as a management consultant and journalist. This career transition helped me take a very deliberate approach to learning the rituals and etiquette of the architecture industry, allowing me through my teaching career to consistently meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

If you're both passionate about and critical of the architecture profession or if you want to find out how architecture can better serve social justice, I am committed to developing your portfolio/skills and helping you find the best opportunities to leverage your interests.
Having taught both undergraduates and Masters students for 3 years, I've developed my syllabi to complement professional education with a greater emphasis on personalized technical tutoring and responding to current technologies, professional developments, and social problems that are less often prioritized in professional training.
My lessons are best-suited for:
A) Students interested in Masters-level education with little or no background in design or architecture - we'll go through the fundamentals of design, software (Rhino, AutoCAD, Revit) while getting an overview of ongoing areas of research in the field, from infrastructural studies to decolonial construction practices.
B) Professionals seeking to better leverage their design skills towards social justice - we'll start by identifying where your interests meet ongoing research and developments in the profession, identify key local stakeholders and how you can work with them immediately, then move to translating your design skills to rigorous research practices (borrowing from current archival and forensic journalistic practices) to build your research/advocacy practice into your day-to-day work
C) Researchers/writers/academics seeking to develop rigor in their architecture-related publications - our sessions are focused on editing, but we'll go into deep dives of current research or construction news when relevant.
Lessons are offered in English, French, or Spanish
