About Debz

**Currently taking on a small number of new students.**

Hi, I’m Debz. I’m a qualified adult nurse with over a decade of clinical experience, and I previously worked for four years as a university lecturer teaching pre-registration nursing students.

I’m currently a full-time PhD student in medicine, with my research focused on health, illness and society. Alongside my clinical background, I hold a Master’s degree with Distinction from the University of Manchester, advanced communication skills qualifications, and a strong grounding in sociology and academic writing.

I genuinely love academic writing and analysis, and I specialise in helping students make sense of what universities are actually looking for. Academic writing can feel like learning a new language, my role is to break it down, build your confidence, and help you structure your work clearly and logically.

I’ve supported many undergraduate & postgraduate students to achieve strong results, including first-class assignments and successful undergraduate and master’s dissertations. My sessions are supportive, practical and tailored to your course requirements, whether you need help with essay structure, critical analysis, OSCE preparation or confidence with academic work.

My lessons are supportive, flexible and tailored to your individual needs. We’ll focus on what you are finding most difficult and work through it step by step, at a pace that feels manageable.

I don’t just “proofread” work - I help you understand how to improve it. This includes breaking down assignment briefs, strengthening structure and argument, improving critical analysis, and helping you develop confidence in academic writing. If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to start, we’ll create a clear plan so you know exactly what to work on next.

Eventually we'll build your confidence that you won't even need me! Thats the dream

I can support you with:

Study skills and time management

Planning and structuring assignments

Academic writing and critical analysis

Understanding feedback and improving resits

Literature searching and literature reviews

Undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations

My aim is to make academic work feel clearer and less overwhelming, especially for students who lack confidence or feel anxious about writing.

Please note: the free first lesson is a short introductory session to understand your learning needs and goals, and to explain how I work. It is not a full tutoring or editing session.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started my nursing degree in 2009, and from then I realised I was able to explain things to my peers in clear and concise way. I'm also a massive geek about ethics and the social aspects of nursing and love talking about it!
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love talking ethics, sociology, communication skills - any 'soft skills' within nursing and healthcare topics. I'm really interested in the function of healthcare within society and how the public view nurses. I'm also really interested on how social media influences how people view their health.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

One of my lecturers at the University of Manchester when I was a student - Joanne. She was so kind and dealt with difficult but essential topics with compassion and sensitivity.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Being able to adapt to individual learning styles and to be able to explain things in a way that makes sense to a student. Being adaptable and reliable is also essential!
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I was always the clever kid and the first in my family to go to university. I know the pressure that can put you under - especially when you're from a working class background!
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Anatomy and physiology. I know what I know - but so much of it is still confusing to me! Endocrinology is my mortal enemy.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love controversial subjects and debate - ethics is a particular favourite. Intersectional Feminist theory is also a passion.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I'm approachable and genuinely want to help you enough that you don't need me!
