About Matthew

My name's Matthew, I'm 27 years old and I'm a former touring drummer and session musician.
I have over 17 years of drumming experience and have performed on festival stages, in concert halls and in studios around the world including Glastonbury Festival and The Royal Albert Hall in the UK, SXSW and KEXP whilst touring in the USA & Mexico, and in multiple venues & theatres across Europe.

About the lesson

Personalised teaching is my style. Fundamentally, I believe that everyone learns differently and I like to use my experience and drumming knowledge to make sure that everyone gets the most out of their lessons whilst feeling a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment! Whether that's learning drums for the first time, wanting to "level up" your overall ability, or struggling in a particular area of your drumming and not knowing how to go about working on it.

Whilst technique is an important part of drumming and something that I'm very comfortable working on, I also like to place musicality right beside it on my list. You can achieve the latter by working on the former but above all it has to sound good!

I have a very patient and encouraging teaching style which carries through to all ages and abilities.

I absolutely love sight-reading and like to use drum notation alongside my teaching where applicable. Don't worry if you don't know how to read, I can teach you!

I also love teaching jazz. I studied it with the great Bob Armstrong - an educator of the highest order. What he taught me in Jazz drumming is invaluable for ALL aspects of drumming and I like to use that in my own lessons (usually for the advanced students).

Lessons can be taught from a practise pad or a drum kit depending on the lesson content.

I offer 30 minute, 45 minute and 1 hour lessons which is based on what we both feel comfortable with.
