About Marie-Louise
Why I Love Teaching
There is nothing like the lightbulb moment when a student suddenly connects with a complex concept and their confidence soars. My passion for teaching truly ignited during my time training community postnatal doulas in lactation management. It was there that I discovered my most valued teaching principle: to never start with what I want to teach, but rather with the rich knowledge and wisdom the students already possess.
Teaching highly complex clinical concepts to individuals with limited formal education and minimal English taught me how to bridge gaps and break down intricate medical terminology into clear, accessible pieces. Furthermore, my academic background in Religious Studies ensures that my approach is culturally sensitive, inclusive, and respectful of your background.
I understand how daunting it can feel to prepare for rigorous international board exams like the IBCLC or to step into a professional clinical space. It can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate it alone.
I chose private tutoring because I love working one-on-one. It gives us the space to focus entirely on your goals, your pace, and your unique professional dreams. Whether you are a midwife mastering clinical terminology, a legal professional polishing your documentation, or an academic fine-tuning a paper, I am here to guide you with patience, real-world insight, and plenty of encouragement. I can't wait to work with you!

My Approach & Methodology
I believe that mastering professional, specialised language requires more than just memorising vocabulary. It requires a true understanding of the context, culture, and unique nuances of your field. Having spent years training students for whom English is a second or even third language, I know that the best way to learn is to start with the rich knowledge and experience you already bring to the table, rather than just focusing on what I want to teach you.
As a former university lecturer, published author, and experienced legal proofreader, I understand the absolute precision required in professional texts. Furthermore, having worked for many years as a lactation consultant and birth professional, I bring real-world clinical insights into my language coaching. I do not just teach grammar rules. I help you build the precise communication skills, critical thinking, and professional confidence needed to excel in your specific career or academic path.
What to Expect in a Typical Lesson
Every lesson is customised to your immediate professional goals or exam requirements. We typically begin with a brief check-in and review, followed by targeted interactive exercises. A normal session might involve analysing case studies, practising clinical or corporate communication, dissecting medical or legal terminology, or fine-tuning professional or academic writing. You will receive constructive, real-time feedback in a supportive space, leaving each session with practical tools and actionable insights you can apply immediately to your work or studies.
Who My Lessons Are Aimed At
My lessons are specifically designed for advanced students, university scholars, and working professionals who need to elevate their English communication for specialised environments. My primary focus areas include:
Healthcare & Birth Professionals: Midwives, doulas, nurses, doctors, and international candidates preparing for the IBCLC exam or seeking to master lactation and maternal healthcare terminology.
Legal & Corporate Professionals: Individuals looking to refine their legal English, master professional communication, or polish high-level business writing.
Writers & Academics: Anyone looking for elite mentorship in structuring, writing, or refining complex texts and research documentation.
Languages of Instruction
I am fully bilingual and proficient in both English and Afrikaans. I am comfortable conducting lessons and explaining intricate concepts in either language to ensure you have a crystal-clear understanding of the material.
Recommendations

I had the absolute pleasure of working alongside Marie-Louise Steyn for over five and a half years — first as a fellow editor and proofreader, and later as the coordinator overseeing our freelance team. In all that time, she stood out as one of the most meticulous, patient, and genuinely caring people I've ever worked with.
Marie-Louise has spent years working with the English language at the highest level of exactness. Out of a team of more than a hundred, she was in the small handful I'd turn to whenever something needed a truly fine eye — the tricky, high-stakes work where not a single word could be out of place. But what makes her special isn't just her command of English, it's how she shares her knowledge. Her feedback was always on point, given in a way that left you feeling more capable, not less. She has real patience, a gift for explaining things clearly, and a warmth that puts you instantly at ease.
For anyone learning English, those are the qualities that matter: someone who knows the language inside out, corrects you with kindness, and genuinely wants you to succeed. Marie-Louise is all of that. Any student who learns from her is in very good hands, and I can recommend her without hesitation.Marie-Louise is a patient, kind and genuinely encouraging ESL teacher who knows how to make students feel comfortable from the start. Learning a new language can sometimes feel intimidating, but she creates a supportive space where students can practise, ask questions and make mistakes without feeling judged.
Her approach helps students build their English skills at their own pace while also growing in confidence. I would highly recommend Marie-Louise to anyone looking for an approachable and dedicated teacher who truly wants to see her students improve and succeed.View more recommendations
