About Sarah

Hello! My name is Sarah Arriaga, and I am a fourth year undergraduate student majoring in Biology at Stanford University. As a college student, I know how stressful trying to learn something is, especially in a fast-paced environment. But not to worry! Tutoring is great because you and I will both get to learn and grow together as we tackle those hard-to-reach topics. Whether it's for fun or to study for an exam, my lessons will revolve completely around YOU and how you learn and strive. I will not make you read pages and pages about biology, although I will provide readings at your disposal. I think the best way to learn science is through visuals, explanations, and application.

Having a tutor may be intimidating, but my goal for you is to feel confident in the topic (and in yourself!) and to not be afraid to ask questions. I am energetic, fun, and excited about biology, so you can expect positivity throughout the entire lesson. I will put it in my full effort, but what you gain from these lessons will be up to you, so come with an open mindset and an eagerness to learn!

About the lesson

Although this would be my first time tutoring, I have taken various courses in molecular and cellular biology. As a student, I have learned various methods that aid students to comprehend as well as retain their learned knowledge. My knowledge and teaching abilities correspond to a younger audience (K-highschool).

Generally, a great lesson plan in my mind is first start out by having a short icebreaker or an interesting biological question. This is great to relieve any tension in the room. I would then ask them about their interest in the topic because I believe having a sense of their interest level may influence how thoroughly I explain things/how simple to explain things. Then, I would ask the student(s) what topics they are struggling on. Firstly, having them explain to me what they know about the topic allows me to assess how much they presently know. Afterwards, giving a general mini-presentation on the topic may help them jog their memory or clear up any confusions. Working through a problem and giving examples and metaphors helps students greatly, so I would be incorporating this in my lessons. Lastly, it is important for them to be able to complete their own problems, so I would have them explain to me again what they know about the topic and conclude with acknowledgements, future topics to focus on, and practice worksheets.
