About John
I have three younger brothers so I know how to communicate with all kinds of people. I like to teach and always have. People in my very own grade look to me for guidance, and I take pride in that. I love to connect with anyone about really anything. Students who quote: "I'm never going to use this in real life" get ready to be enlightened!

I like to really engage with my students' interests. If your kid likes space, we're building a rocket! Sports? We're scoring points! Math shouldn't be about tedious worksheets, let's explore real-world concepts and problems. For students in K-5th grade (Elementary) a typical lesson includes lots of visuals and objects to explain topics. I will also create a fun educational game with your student so they can get excited about solving problems. I like to end off with tasking something they can bring home like counting how many times they eat in a week. I want to foster an environment so your student has a solid understanding of the basics while still being excited to learn. For students in 6-8th grade (Middle) a typical lesson includes a real-life problem, and then I will work with your student to solve the problem while exploring the topic further. Next is a worksheet or game, helping if they are confused and hands-off if they understand. Last is an active discussion with your child about what they learned, and more real-life problems related to the topic. I want to foster independence and confidence in your child's skills so they are ready to ask for help and use the materials available to them. For students in 9th grade taking Algebra I or Geometry. A typical lesson will include 5-10 problems I will work with your student on solving, guiding them as I see fit. I want to get your child ready to communicate with me and their teachers on what they need or don't understand. I also want to familiarize your student with tools such as a TI-84 or the Desmos graphing calculator. Math at this point should not be about memorization, but applying formulas and understanding how to tackle unfamiliar problems.
