About Steffan De Kock

I started my musical journey in London, England at age six when I began playing the cello. I also started learning guitar at the age of ten. Regarding the cello I studied most notably under the highly experienced and respected Finnish Cellist Katri Patel and the South African Cellist and conductor Carel Henn who is one of the founding members of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra as well as a highly regarded bastion of the South African classical music industry. Under these teachers I passed my grade 8 cello exam with a high distinction of 95%. Regarding orchestral experience, I studied in a classical youth orchestra for cello at Morley College, London led by renowned conductor Peter Ash and was the principal cellist of the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra for two years. I currently play in the Witwatersrand Orchestra. At age 16 I began producing music and formed a friendship with a revered London-based producer and guitar session musician and started interning at his studio back in London. I have also played in various blues bars as a guitarist and was a student under South African guitar virtuoso Dan Patlansky. I moved to Johannesburg in 2023 and am involved with the South African music industry, having played with various professional orchestras, and am regularly involved in concerts for high profile clients. I have also made several appearances on TV and in music videos; having played in large musical productions and TV shows such as Netflix, Joy of Jazz and Afrikaans is Groot. I produce music and am a regular performer in the South African music industry. I have many students, both in-person and online and have been teaching with excellent results for my students.

About the lesson

My lessons are aimed specifically at beginners who want to start the journey of learning to play the cello and to those who have just started. I am very passionate about music, especially the cello. I am eager to share what I have learnt in the past 14 years and to get more South Africans playing the cello!
