About Yap

I’m currently studying at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). Math has always been my comfortable subjects, so naturally, it is the subject I feel most confident in teaching. I’m interested in teaching primary school students from Year 1 - 6, I’m also open to teaching Science, English, Mandarin, and other subjects. Mandarin is my mother tongue, so I’m comfortable teaching it as well.

I would describe myself as a patient, gentle, and step-by-step teacher. I enjoy explaining things to others because, interestingly, teaching also helps me understand myself better. When I explain a topic, I become more aware of how well I actually understand it, what I might have missed, and which areas I still need to improve. In that way, teaching others is also a way for me to keep improving myself.

I also enjoy the challenge that comes with teaching. Sometimes students ask questions that I have struggled with before, and I can understand how confusing or frustrating those questions can feel. This is one of the reasons I enjoy tutoring — I want to help students who are struggling with the same things I once struggled with. Instead of making them go through unnecessary frustration, I hope to guide them towards a clearer and easier way of understanding and solving the problem.

When I teach, I don’t want students to simply memorize a formula or copy a method. I usually guide them through the process step by step: What is the question asking? What information are we given? What conditions do we have? Which formula or method should we use? And most importantly, why should we use it? I believe understanding these basics helps students become more independent. Even when they encounter a question that looks completely different from what they have practiced before, they can still use the same way of thinking to solve it.

I’ve also gained some teaching experience from helping my friends whenever they don’t understand something. Since I’m familiar with the questions and topics I’m explaining, I usually try to guide them through the way I would approach the problem myself, rather than simply giving them the answer. Seeing them finally understand something they were struggling with is honestly one of the things I enjoy about teaching.

Of course, I’m also looking for tutoring work as a source of income. At the same time, I genuinely feel that teaching is something that helps me grow, communicate better, and strengthen my own understanding. As a university student, my class schedule changes from semester to semester, so I’m looking for a tutoring arrangement with some flexibility rather than a fixed full-time tuition-center schedule.

Overall, I hope to be a tutor who is patient, approachable, and clear in explaining things, while helping students build the confidence to eventually solve problems on their own.

I believe Math is easier to understand when students know where the formulas come from instead of simply memorizing them. I like using graphs, diagrams, and simple examples to show how formulas are derived and how they can be applied to different questions. I also try to show students how different topics are connected, such as how trigonometry, graphs, and calculus build on concepts they have already learned. I have experience helping friends with their studies and explaining difficult topics step by step. My lessons are mainly for primary school students, with a focus on building a strong foundation and making Math easier and less intimidating. Lessons can be adjusted according to each student's pace and areas that need more practice.
