About Michael
I hold a BA in Linguistics, an MA in South Asia (India) Studies, and an MA in TESOL. I have taught English as a Second Language for over 18 years at various universities, adult education centers, and K-12 schools in the USA and also in India. I am proficient in Spanish, French, Russian, Hindi, and Marathi, and not bad at Klingon along with a smattering of other languages.
When not teaching, I enjoy reading, writing, and performing stories through various forms of puppetry, especially stories that shed light on the universals of life. Stories require imagination, both to tell and hear. I believe that all communication is an act of imagination because you can never truly know what’s going on in another person’s head. My teaching, therefore, like my writing, is infused with the belief that learning, whether art or science, requires well-developed, active, powerful imaginations, because it is through those imaginings that we co-create the reality around us. It may be all in our heads, but that is the beauty of it!

Need help with conversational, academic, or business ESL? Need help with English Language Arts? I have helped adults, college and high school students, and children improve their academic and conversational English in just a few weeks. I've been a high school and college teacher for nearly 20 years. I became a teacher in order to be a better learner, and have learned that a “guide on the side,” not as a “sage on the stage,” can better focus on students' needs and goals. I tailor each lesson to students' unique needs, so sessions can be as formal or as relaxed as you like. For children, I focus on learning through creative storytelling via dramatic role play and puppetry.
