About Gillian

I love learning! I encourage my students to be curious and ask questions; I help them see links between what they already know and the new ideas they are trying to understand, so that they gain a depth of understanding. I want my students to benefit from the joy of grappling with a complex idea and then grasping it. Please drop me a message to find out more and ask any questions!

Maths can be a daunting subject, but that makes the reward of success all the greater! My approach combines gentleness and humour with enthusiasm and challenge, engaging students to develop their confidence and their interest in logic and problem-solving. I ensure that work is at the right level for the student, which increases their motivation so that students can quickly see the rewards for their efforts and feel satisfied that they are making progress towards grasping a topic. I use proven psychological techniques to help students to flourish and overcome the challenges maths presents: - I ensure that they understand how this topic relates to what they already know; maths can sometimes feel like a foreign language. I help them to see that they already have the building blocks of each new topic. If one of their “blocks” is missing, I will identify this and take them back to the last step they are confident in, and build their knowledge up from there. - we talk about how each topic relates to real life. - analogies help them to understand the new idea, relating it to something from everyday life that has meaning to them. - interleaved practice consolidates their understanding and challenges them to retain their new knowledge. I work with students from KS2 to A level; this means that I know what students will have learnt previously, and where they are going next, and can help them to see the links for themselves. I always always consider the board specification in planning, and set homework between sessions to consolidate the learning from the session.

Find out more about Gillian

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Maths and English were my favourite subjects at school, and I always found myself helping other students around me to understand them better, as well as teaching my little sister everything she knows ;)
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

In English, I love talking to students about where words come from, thinking about the languages that have fed into our exciting language.

In Maths, I enjoy explaining complex concepts to students, seeing them grappling with the new idea until it begins to make sense as they apply it.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a brilliant maths teacher, who always pushed us to stretch ourselves, and had a knack for explaining maths in ways that made sense.

I also had a fabulous English teacher, who never let us get away with writing something we wouldn't be proud of.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, humour, humility and the ability to work out what a student already knows, and to link new ideas to a student's pre-existing knowledge.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When we had to choose options at GCSE, everyone else was thrilled to be able to do new subjects, that weren't maths and English; I really struggled to choose: I just wanted to do more English and Maths!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Both English and Maths give us space to learn forever! One of my favourite bits of being a tutor is that I have many different students, and quite often one of them with teach me a method that I haven't come across before, which I can then share with new students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I like to learn about how to teach, particularly how to teach kids with SEND, as techniques that work for people with SEND will usually improve my teaching, forcing me to be clearer, more precise, and not leave any room for misunderstanding.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I remember what it was like not to know things, to the on the other side of the table, to be the one struggling to get my head around something new, and always aim to be kind, honest, and share my love of learning.
