About Shay
I believe mathematics can be accessible to everyone. Through my tutoring I aim to build both knowledge and confidence, and foster broader learning skills that set a learner up for success in all areas of education.
I graduated from the University of Birmingham in the top ten of my cohort with first class honours in mathematics and philosophy, and undertook rigorous training in teaching on the highly competitive Teach First programme. I have experience in small and large classroom settings of various ages, as well as tutoring one-on-one with students of varying abilities and needs.
My approach to teaching is attentive and patient, with a genuine attitude that learning can be enjoyable and rewarding in its own right. I aim to break down concepts that learners find difficult and consolidate the fundamentals of maths that can often get rushed past in the classroom. With more time to appreciate and understand how the cogs of the mathematical machine fit together, even completely new and unseen concepts can be readily grasped by an inquisitive learner – and this curiosity is something I feel I can also inspire in students with my passion for the subject.
I am competent to tutor students of all abilities and ages in maths, working specifically to a curriculum or exam, or assisting with difficult topics or homework as they come up and solidifying what is taught in class. With schooling being disrupted lately, I will be able to help identify what a learner has missed and help them catch up and prepare for the next school year.
Short-term bookings are also welcomed – if a learner feels they only need help with a particular topic or problem rather than ongoing tutoring, I am more than happy to help.
I can also provide tutoring in physics, IT, and computer science at GCSE level, and philosophy GCSE/A-level.
