Find out more about Ivan

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in Maths and Physics when I began my Alevel studies. I was simply blown away by the content and relevancy of both subjects. I took an even further interest in astronomy as I pursued that for my undergraduate studies. It was at university when I felt I had to share knowledge to the upcoming generation. From my first tutee, it felt like I was able to convey the content in an engaging manner.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach predominantly physics as well as biology and chemistry. I also like to teach maths as it closely correlates with physics. I really enjoy having discussions with students regarding how science is all around and within us. This increases the attentiveness I find.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

For me, my role models are my parents, grand parents and science teachers who inspired me into the field. Through their dedication and motivation, it fueled a passion for learning within me.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think foremost, a good tutor must be patient. Willing to invest time into their tutees. To remove any expert-induced blindness and view learning from the child's perspective. Secondly, I think a good tutor must be enthusiastic about their subject. As a result, the receipient of the lessons will mirror, in time, an interest similar.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At school, I was told I was not smart enough to do physics. This, of course, was very shocking to hear. However, I used it to drive my desire even more to study physics. Although at the time, those were hurtful, I used it as motivation to persevere.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Many people till this day state maths and physics are 'hard'. When in fact, both subjects once understood carefully, flow in tandem in the world. There is a real harmony when one can apply maths and physics to the real world. What was once viewed as 'difficult', now is seen as part of the dynamic of life. Something as simple as opening a door using the principles of moments.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have passion for learning. Whether its learning a new song on the guitar, learning how to lean more precisely on my motorbike or reading a profound scripture. I firmly believe, when once is learning, they are growing intellectually. Knowledge is something that never be taken or lost.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a superprof is that I genuinely care about students I teach. I invest vigilantly into imparting the right knowledge but also getting to know them, so that there is a connection during lessons. Ultimately, I strive to make learning fun and relaxed, while still challenging and thought provoking.
