Tutoring Approach:
I provide a personalised online tuition programme and I have been teaching science at GCSE, IGCSE, A level and university level for over 10 years and have worked with a variety of pupils with various abilities, learning styles, strengths and weaknesses.
The tuition sessions are very structured and tailored to the needs and learning style of the student, focusing on any weaknesses. These needs are usually pinpointed within the first meeting and I tailor all sessions to the individual specific exam board.
I apply a variety of different teaching techniques and styles that I have found to be effective in order to make studying enjoyable, interesting as well as beneficial, helping students to reach and excel to their full potential.
My strategy in teaching addresses multiple areas to greatly benefit students' approach to learning which helps build their confidence. These include:
- Help students to actually understand concepts and topics (rather than simply memorising facts)
- Support with exam techniques, specific exam terminology and definitions that are commonly asked
- Extensive exposure to actual exam board specific questions (I have an extensive array of relevant up-to-date educational and past exam papers, split by topic, for all subjects)
- Provide support with revision techniques and advice to self-learn and self-motivate
- Assist with composing an effective weekly study schedule tailored and based around the student's extra-curricular activities
- Provide comprehensive feedback after each lesson on students' progress, homework results and areas to improve

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Stephen has been tutoring my child in Science online since Year 9. My child is a capable student, particularly strong in Maths, but he had been struggling with Science — finding it difficult to understand the material, not revising effectively, and getting bored during double lessons. This was likely also impacted by having a non-specialist teacher at school.
I found Stephen through recommendations and was fortunate to secure one of his available slots.
From the outset, Stephen made the subject engaging. I was genuinely surprised that my child could stay focused for 90-minute sessions without losing interest. The lessons are very well-structured and tailored to my child’s needs. Stephen quickly identified the areas of weakness early on and has focused on building real understanding of the topics, rather than just memorising content.
There is regular homework based on upcoming exams, with a strong focus on exam-style questions and techniques. Stephen sets proper tests, marks them thoroughly, and then reviews them in detail during the following session, which really helps track progress and build confidence.
I particularly value the detailed feedback Stephen sends by email after every lesson. His updates are consistent, thorough, and insightful — something I have not experienced with any previous tutors across any subjects.
He also regularly shares a tracking sheet using a clear green, amber, and red system. Even as a parent with limited subject knowledge, it’s very easy to see exactly where my child stands and where more focus is needed.
Most importantly, my child’s understanding of Science has improved. The progress has been steady and noticeable. Stephen has also helped him develop better revision habits and exam approach, while striking the right balance between being supportive and maintaining high expectations.
My child started his GCSE exams last week, and I feel confident he is well prepared thanks to Stephen’s support. While Science is still not his favourite subject, he fully recognises how much Stephen’s guidance has helped him improve.Stephen has been tutoring my sons for three years now. He began tutoring my older son, Louis, at the end of Year 10. Louis had fallen very far behind in his combined science courses. Stephen began weekly two-hour online sessions with him over the summer holidays and throughout Year 11. He taught everything by reference to the detailed course specification - reviewing his weaker subjects first, setting exam practice questions as homework, and reviewing and providing feedback on those questions in the next lesson. As Louis saw his weekly homework marks improve, his confidence improved. Alongside this, Stephen helped him organize his wider revision schedule, which helped him feel more organized and in control of his revision. Louis achieved a 6-7, having only just achieved a 4-4 in his mock, which was an amazing improvement in just one year of tutoring.
As my younger son, Ethan, entered Year 10, we started his tutoring with Stephen early, and he used the same methods to support him throughout his GCSE course. Ethan is now predicted an 8-8 but is hoping to achieve a 9-9 because he can see from his homework marks he is able to achieve at that level.
Stephen has throughout provided detailed feedback each week to us, either in person after the lessons or by email, which has helped us as parents to support their learning and revision.
All lessons have been online, which the boys like because it is convenient, and because Stephen ensures cameras are kept on and the lessons are very interactive, this works very well.
I can’t recommend Stephen highly enough - he is fully committed to and invested in the success of his tutees and has methods which keep them fully focused on the outcomes.
He is also a lovely man. He even watched my son’s rugby final on YouTube and messaged him about the outcome, which Ethan was so touched by - and these things build the relationship between them. I cannot recommend him highly enough.During the first session, Dr. Lui really connected with our son and made him feel relaxed and at ease. He is very passionate and was amazing at helping to support our son with his Combined Sciences.
Our son lost hope, faith, and confidence in the Science subjects, despite having used three different Science tutors in years 9 and 10. This changed dramatically after we found Dr. Lui at the end of year 10. In the first session, Dr. Lui quickly identified my son’s weaknesses and tailored his preparation and teaching to suit our son. Lessons were online and proved to be very effective. We have used face-to-face tutors in the past, and Dr. Lui’s online lessons were very well planned and executed, and by far much more effective than past face-to-face tutors. He is very patient and allowed our son enough time to work things out without jumping in too quickly. At the same time, he is able to explain new and difficult concepts simply, and he ensures that our son thoroughly understands each topic.
Our son always looked forward to Dr. Lui’s lessons and grew in confidence after each lesson. After each topic, Dr. Lui would provide tailor-made exam questions to delve into our son’s understanding and assess his exam techniques and knowledge of the subject. Dr. Lui would provide thorough and constructive feedback after each lesson on ways our son can improve.
Before using Dr. Lui’s tuition service, our son was predicted grade 5-5 for his Science GCSEs. With Dr. Lui’s dedication and support, our son achieved grades 9-9 for his GCSE Combined Sciences. This would not have been achieved without the amazing support from Dr. Lui. We have no reservation in recommending Dr. Lui; he is a fantastic tutor and a very caring person!Stephen has been incredibly helpful and supportive in guiding my daughter towards not only a clear understanding of the subject requirements but also explaining scientific concepts she once found difficult to grasp. Stephen was able to highlight areas of weakness straight away from the initial assessment, and they were addressed immediately. Lessons were online and very effective. My daughter had been struggling with Chemistry and Physics immensely, and before her sessions, she was sitting at a very low 5 for the subject. But after 16 months of tuition with Stephen and thanks to the clear exam techniques, exam practice, and insightful approach to tackling tricky experimental questions, my daughter has achieved three grade 9s. Amazingly, through Stephen's inspiring teaching, my daughter has now decided to sit A-level Biology and Chemistry. Thank you so much, Stephen, for helping my daughter do her very best and work to her full potential. Your teaching has been amazing!
I have no hesitation in recommending Stephen as a science tutor.Stephen is an enthusiastic and exceptional tutor who does much to reassure anxious parents whose daughter has lost her zest for Sciences. He has formidable knowledge within his subject field and in skills such as organisation, time management, exam techniques and helped create study schedules that actually work.
Emma has found Stephen to be very friendly, approachable and very helpful. His communication is excellent and she really enjoyed his sessions. We were very apprehensive with online tutoring but have been pleasantly surprised on the effectiveness. He prepares for each session in advance, with the lessons always starting on time. He is friendly, understanding, and easy to get on with. Emma is generally shy with new people; I appreciate Stephen’s ability to make one feel at ease in a conversation. He makes it okay to make mistakes, which has proven to be very effective at encouraging Emma to be more active than in class or with other tutors we have had.
Stephen lets you feel like you are perfectly capable of doing what you need to. He also adapts to his tutee’s needs and preferences in things like the pace at which you go through the material, level of detail you go into and how much homework you want to have, if any.
As our daughter has processing issues, it makes it difficult to write, especially while talking. Stephen makes sure to pause to ensure Emma understands concepts before proceeding and she makes very clear revision notes during the lesson. He is patient and never rushes our daughter, only continuing when she says she is ready to move on. Stephen gives thorough feedback with constructive criticism and attention to detail as well as much-needed praise on strong points of your response. It is clear that Stephen puts a lot of effort into his work, and is dedicated to helping his students, offering to assist with any questions or difficulties you may have between sessions. What I especially like about Stephen is that he challenges and encourages our daughter to push limits.
Before we started utilising Stephen’s support, for her end of year 10 school exams, Emma achieved 655 for his Triple Science GCSE. After 10 months of excellent tuition with Stephen, Emma has achieved an amazing 999 for her Sciences.
We highly recommend Stephen for his tremendous guidance, excellent teaching approach and care. Thank you so much Stephen! We have found Stephen to be an excellent Science tutor: knowledgeable, reliable, well prepared and friendly. Being an Oxford graduate it is no surprise that he was excellent. We contacted him in May 2021 after our son had achieved grades 4s for his combined GCSE Sciences. Our son has dyslexia and dyspraxia and Stephen was extremely helpful, professional and patient with him. Stephen really connected with our son and made him feel relaxed and at ease. Lessons were weekly via Skype and 2 hours in duration. Even though we were pessimistic about online teaching and we thought our son would lack concentration, Stephen’s tailor made and engaging lessons ensured our son remained focused throughout the 2 hours. Amazingly, after each lesson our son would enthusiastically share about the topics he learnt, something he has never done. Our son confessed to us that with Stephen's support, he can now understand all the Science topics. Stephen would set exam style questions, which really solidified our son's learning and he gained a lot of confidence and exam techniques. Stephen was always prompt with any query and after each lesson provided constructive feedback how he would help our son. Stephen is easily the best teacher we have come across (and we have tried many Science tutors in the past). For the 2022 summer exams, our son achieved grades 9s for his combined GCSE Sciences. We cannot thank Stephen enough for all his hard work, encouragement, amazing support and we recommend him from all our hearts.
Stephen is an exceptional tutor. We cannot recommend Stephen enough, he is amazing and incredibly supportive to our daughter. She achieved 6’s in her end of year 10 Triple GCSE Sciences and lacked confidence in the subject. In the first lesson, Stephen was very quick to identify gaps in her learning and knowledge; setting a plan on what needs to be taught. He built a good teaching relationship with her and our daughter feels very comfortable with Stephen and his teaching style. We have valued the way in which his encouragement has given her greater confidence in her own ability to tackle a subject that she has found challenging on occasions. Stephen worked hard to develop both her capability but also enthusiasm for the subject. The sessions were undertaken via online Skype and were always well planned out; always engaging and tailored to our daughter’s learning style. Stephen would encourage our daughter to invest time in completing the homework that he set. After 9 months of tutoring, the results speak for themselves with three 9’s for Triple GCSE Sciences. Thank you so much Stephen
