About Joshua
I am a mechanical engineer with a passion for maths, physics and teaching. Since graduating from the University of Bath in 2015 with a 2:1 masters degree (MEng) in mechanical engineering, I have been working in the automotive industry as a computational fluid dynamics analyst.
A lot of engineers approach mathematics and physics simply as tools which they can use to help them solve various design and manufacture problems and to an extent, as an engineer who has worked in industry, I am one of them.
However I also have a genuine love of maths and physics which goes beyond their usefulness and application. In fact I would go as far as saying that I believe both subjects are inherently fascinating and with the right teaching, anyone can grow to love them.
I take great pleasure in helping my students get over the fear, frustration and negativity that they might associate with Maths as a subject, but actually often comes from misunderstanding foundational principles which once fixed, everything else falls into place.

I give lessons in maths and physics up to A Level standard. I tend to tailor my lesson structure to the needs of the student and to what they want and how they learn best. If for example they are struggling with a mock exam I will go through the paper with them and analyse their answers to see where they are going wrong. If i diagnose gaps in their knowledge, I can then help to fill those gaps.
Alternatively if there are any topics which the student knows they are weaker on, or indeed if its a topic which happens to interest the student, I can spend a lessons teaching them that topic.
I think everybody learns differently and I am open to teaching at whatever pace and in whatever style the student requires. Some may prefer to do example questions under supervision, others may prefer for me to spend the lesson giving them a lecture on the topic. Some like to learn with a hybrid approach where I am teaching them in an interactive lecture style where they can work through problems as I go through the topic.
I will discuss with the student in the first lesson how they enjoy being taught, and if they aren't sure we can work out the best method for them as we go along.
Ultimately I want the student to feel comfortable, happy and most importantly to be learning. If at any point the teaching style I am using isn't working for them or if the pace is wrong, they can let me know and I can make changes.
