About Alice

SF Bay Area established family music class teacher where I've taught for eleven years. I have taught beginning piano privately for 6 years, and I lead music with guitar at several local preschools and perform (sing) for private events as well as with a community ensemble.

As a piano teacher, my work is informed by my early learning experience which was often frustrating! I studied from age 8 till 17 years old. My teachers (bless them all) didn't know how to work with someone who could play by ear. In adulthood I sought out educational support by a music therapist who was highly recommended and she gave me a wonderful method to 'rehab' my own skills.

From there she mentored me in teaching these same methods to beginning learners, especially aimed at learners who can play by ear and pick out/replicate melodies from memory. This is my specialty, though it is not required for my students to fit this profile.

I provide an early learning experience which includes basic theory/sight reading tools as well as opportunities for students to play with rhythm, sounds, the physical aspects of the piano or keyboard, and any musical inspirations they have (which can be pop songs or something they're working on independently at home, etc). I really aim to find out what students are inspired to learn and support them in that quest!

Come play with me on the piano and learn foundational music concepts in the process! I want to hear what YOU love about music, what things you are interested in learning (and if you're a parent of a learner, I want to know your thoughts and aspirations too!)

I'm a neurodivergent mom and early childhood music educator. My aim is to connect with my students, PLAY to their strengths, and provide basic technique, sight reading, and theory, as well as creating a safe place to experiment with improvisational sound creation.

My lessons are ideal for enthusiastic learners who are 8 years or older. I'm a good fit for kids/learners (and their parents) who mainly want a FUN experience and a sense of competence and satisfaction with playing. There is a time in kids' lives (roughly 8-12) when they're physically advanced enough to develop fine motor skills, and emotionally stable enough to combine these with the gross motor skills of balance, posture, and directional movement needed for piano playing.

I have learned a teaching system from an established music therapist who mentored me in rehabilitating my own sight reading skills, and in the process also shared with me her brilliant insights into teaching other people who are neurodivergent and often have gifts of perfect or relative pitch, but perhaps haven't benefited well from traditional teaching methods.

Traditional methods often don't give attention to the learning needs of someone who "already hears the music" in their head, but needs support with translating the visual language of musical notation.

I don't prime students for recitals and performance, I *do* require parents to learn specific methods for learning so that they support their kids at home well, and I pay close attention to kids' limits. To me this means I am clear that the main goal for my students is that they are *enjoying* what we do together and get to see results quickly. Depending on their age, I will sometimes break up our activities into rhythm exercises or musical games.

The goal is not to complete a schedule of tedious and arduous skill building, but a connection in real time with each other, with the many aspects of music, and keeping the flame of music alive for kids who are drawn to it!

What I've seen in my own child and in others is that kids have a boredom threshold and if there's too much musical broccoli with no dessert, they tire of it and lose interest. When the whole family is involved with the learning process, it's a shared experience and shared fun!
