About Maya

My official name is Rosa-Magdalena but I grew up as Maya. So I prefer to be called that way by my students and colleagues. My native language is Spanish and I am originally from Lima, Peru. I started tutoring/teaching during the summers while I was studying to be a language teacher at age 17, so I have many years of tutoring/teaching experience. I love sharing my language and culture which includes our world renowned gastronomy, the amazing history of my ancestors: the Incas and their incredible accomplishments and treasures such as Cuzco and MachuPicchu. I prepare Power Point presentations that allow my students take virtual trips to the fascinating world of the Incas and to other beautiful areas in Peru, such as the Amazon rainforest. In fact, I have had numerous students who come to me to brush up on their Spanish before a trip to South America, Mexico or Spain.
I love dancing so I always try to teach my students (in Spanish!) how to dance salsa and how to cook some delicacies from the Latin world.
My Language Teaching Bachelor's degree and my Applied Linguistics Master's degree have given me the knowledge of language teaching techniques that are proven and effective.
I am also a voice-over and on-camera talent so I am used to preparing audio and video materials that supplement my teaching.
I am also a Nutritional Chef graduated from NTI and the Escoffier Culinary School, and I love teaching delicious Peruvian dishes.
I like to use and share the many talents God has given me and my mom has taught me. And my teaching motto is: "If the teaching is fun, engaging and significant, it is memorable, therefore effective,"

About the lesson

My teaching motto is: "If teaching is fun, engaging and significant, it is memorable, therefore effective."
My teaching is definitely fun and engaging for every level and every age. My classes for adults as well as for children are full of props, activities and lots of humor! I always tell my adult students: "It's never too late to have a happy childhood." They love it because they can forget the seriousness of the business world and let their inner child come out and enjoy learning a new language without any fears of not being perfect. Because foreign language learning includes oral performance, I make sure my students of all ages feel perfectly comfortable making mistakes and correcting themselves or getting support from others such as myself as a teacher or other students who are willing to help.
I think it is essential to keep students motivated to learn Spanish by describing in detail the benefits of knowing the second most common language in world and be able to use it for travel, work, and even be able to enjoy the wonderful culture of Latin people who live here in the US who have parties, festivals, foods, cook offs, dances, etc. Knowing Spanish, even at a minimum level would open so many doors that would lead them to new opportunities and also to create wonderful memories once they are immersed in the Latin world.
