About Alex

*I'm currently offering a reduced rate of $100/hr to my first five students until the March '27 sitting (usually $140)*

Hi, I'm Alex! I scored 92 in Section 2 in March '26 (up from 78 in September '25).

I'm originally from Sydney and completed a science degree at USYD. I'm now finishing a PhD in Philosophy & Psychology at Stanford, and have just accepted a CSP offer for the MD at USYD.

I'm a published writer with solo work in academic journals and public-facing magazines. A recent essay was a finalist for the international Aeon Philosophy Prize.

I've tutored and lectured students for 6 years, at both USYD and Stanford. Much of my job is developing student essays: helping them work out what they think about complex problems, and turning their ideas into clear, persuasive writing. I especially enjoy teaching philosophy to science students, and science to philosophy students.

Whatever your starting point, I'd love to help you do well in Section 2!

About the lesson

Lessons are 1:1 and highly personalised.

The first 30 minutes are *free*: you'll send me an essay beforehand, and we'll go through it together and agree on a plan. After each lesson, I'll send written feedback by email, so you have a clear record of what was covered and what to work on next. I also offer advanced essay marking ($45/essay, $120/three), which includes detailed inline comments and targeted redrafting tasks. You're welcome to try this before committing to a lesson.

There is a *vast* number of ways to succeed in S2. I can teach you the approach that worked for me—or help you find and refine your own style.

Whatever your approach, my goal is to help you express your own ideas with clarity, rigour, and charisma. The best S2 responses are insightful, genuine, and a pleasure to read. These are difficult things to do well—but they are absolutely learnable!

I disagree with a surprising amount of the S2 advice I see online. I believe rote-learned templates, essay-writing 'hacks', and other shortcuts tend to produce responses that are superficial, generic, and fragile. They don't set you up to adapt to a challenging prompt, nor to stand out on a familiar one. It is far better to build the underlying skills of interpreting a prompt, generating an idea, and exploring it with depth and originality—so you can deftly handle whatever comes up on the day.

You do not need to be a trained or naturally talented writer to do this well. In fact, I see many students make the profound mistake of thinking they need to imitate a formal, pseudo-academic, 'writerly' voice to score well. That is bound to undermine the quality of their thinking and their command of language. Simple, direct, authentic writing is always better. I'll help you find and develop your natural voice.

Lessons also cover essay structure, grammar and style, and how to write about your experiences (e.g., in Task B) and knit your personality into your writing. And I'll show you how to use secondary resources well, including how to lean on AI chatbots...and how not to.

We will meet online. I'm based in the US and happy to work across time zones. Reach out and let's talk about where you're at!
