About Maclaren

Hi! I am Maclaren, an 18-year-old recent A-level student taking a gap year before going on to study psychology at university. Psychology has been a genuine passion of mine, particularly the biological side of the subject. I achieved an A* in A-Level Psychology, and this interest has led me to explore the subject further through writing my own research essays, taking online learning programmes, and diving deeper into the topics in the AQA A-Level Psychology course. This passion for Psychology has encouraged me to help other students build their own confidence and interest in it.

Having struggled initially to wrap my head around the amount of content in the A-level Psychology course, I understand first-hand how stressful and overwhelming the course can feel. This led me to make it my mission to find ways of learning, revising and explaining difficult content while also building confidence in the course.

I am friendly, patient and approachable, and I want students to feel completely comfortable with asking questions and expressing confusion, as this is what I valued when I was learning the material in Years 12 and 13. My aim is to create a relaxed environment where students can build their understanding without feeling judged or pressured.

About the lesson

I aim to make A-level psychology feel manageable and straightforward, rather than complicated and overwhelming. Having recently completed my A-levels, achieving an A* in psychology and As in two other essay subjects (English Literature and Politics), I have a current understanding of the content, course, and the exam technique required to achieve top grades. Having explored various revision and learning techniques myself, I can offer various approaches to learning, such as aiding active recall, marking and providing feedback on the students' work, and explaining and simplifying content. While the approaches to learning may vary depending on the student, a typical lesson may range between 40 minutes to an hour, including breaking down how to answer different questions, explaining and consolidating content whilst actively recalling old content, and practising answering exam questions. Having a real passion for psychology, and planning to study it in university next year, I want lessons to feel relaxed and encouraging, while also ensuring each A-Level student feels more confident and prepared after each session.
