About Johann

There is nothing more satisfying than explaining a concept to a tutee and witnessing them have the ‘aha’ moment when it all clicks into place! I have had the honour of seeing this countless times, and each time it is a beautiful reminder of why I tutor. Tutoring is a passion for me. Playing an active role in education is in my blood. My grandparents were both primary school teachers, my mother was a tutor, my cousin is also a primary school teacher, and my aunt is an HMI (His Majesty’s Inspectors). I have been doing this as my main source of income for five years now. What have I learnt in that time?

The most important thing for academic attainment is being consistent. Day in, day out, week in, week out… Showing up and doing the work. I am here to make sure that happens. My students make the most progress when they are willing to practice consistently between lessons.

My philosophy, generally, is that school and education is a way of preparing one for life. Often, the material picked up in school is forgotten. However, what remains with us are the soft skills. The ability to meet a deadline, to work independently, as a team, to continue even when it gets hard! It is preparing us for life, and the beauty is that in school, it is possible to have a second chance. In the professional world, the stakes are higher and the consequences greater, so enjoy this time and dive deep into understanding what works for you!

I teach online using Bitpaper. In our lessons, we will focus on solving problems, understanding exam language and exam technique through practicing exam questions, making it so that completing the easier questions on the exam paper becomes second nature. For most topics, I use first principles with minimal aids and draw what information you know about the topic before explaining it. At the end of each lesson, I will ask you to tell me what you have learnt from that lesson.

Homework will always be set and expected to be completed before the next lesson. Notion is used to keep track of homework and to stay focused. For those who wish, the lessons are recorded using Fathom, the summary is sent via email or wherever is preferred, and posted on Notion.

I am very good at keeping students engaged by creating a space for focus. The hard work is done by you as the student! I am guiding you, keeping you on track, and giving you the support day in and day out. I learn from each student and that's why I ask all students to fill out a feedback form at the end of each lesson to gain insights and gather data to improve!

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always loved maths. I have had the best tutors myself - my A-level Spanish tutor now teaches at the UN, my Physics tutor is at the forefront of research in string theory and my Maths tutor is a successful actuary. I know a good tutor can make all the difference.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I thoroughly enjoy teaching Maths as it helps me hone my own skills. One of my preferred topics is Surds. It makes sense to me as it is related to Algebra and Algebra is one of my stronger topics. However, I find tutoring parts of Geometry challenging. For example, the interior and exterior angles of many-sided shapes such as a hexagon are hard for me to explain because it is one of my weaker topics.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Grandfather would tutor me in Maths as well as my Mum. They both would say: ''There is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher''. That always inspired me to keep learning and I have kept that mindset when tutoring.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

There are so many qualities that make one a good tutor! If I had to narrow it down, I think one needs to be patient, perseverant, and consistent. It takes time for students to grasp what they are being tutored and at times it can be frustrating when they don't understand something. It reflects poorly on one as a tutor. However, my patience, perseverance, and consistency lead to my students understanding the material better and improving their results.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I grew up in Croatia and went to primary school in the Croatian education system. At the age of fifteen, I switched to the UK system and took my GCSEs. It was challenging making the switch but I learnt how to adapt. I think being able to adapt to new environments is key to attainment.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

When taking my A-levels I failed the practical exam for Physics. I had to retake it and scored a high A on it. It was a lesson of perseverance and as I previously mentioned this is important for being a tutor. It is also important as a tutee. Maths is a constant learning experience. You can always improve. I am sure I will be faced with many challenges when I start my Degree in April of 2023.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching. Receiving positive feedback for my lessons is so encouraging, it makes me feel happy and fulfilled! I also enjoy being there for my students, being a constant support throughout their studies both academically as well as on a deeper level.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

As I previously mentioned, the qualities that I think are most important to be a good tutor are perseverance, patience, and consistency. I believe I have all of those qualities. I am also friendly so don't be afraid to book a lesson with me!
