About Marcus
I'm Marcus Burns, a swim instructor with 7 years of experience that has taken me from the trembling hands of a fifty-year-old man who had spent his whole life avoiding any body of water deeper than a bathtub — to the joyful, tearful high-five he gave me after swimming his first full lap alone, something he'd been terrified of since childhood. My approach is built on deep patience and genuine warmth — I believe everyone deserves to feel safe and joyful in the water, regardless of age or fear level. I'm meticulous about breath control, safe entry and exit, and recognizing the early signs of cold water or fatigue — because those are the skills that actually prevent drowning. I'm endlessly patient with hesitation, with tears, with students who need to hold the wall for five minutes before trying again. And I'm genuinely proud every time a student tells me they went to a beach without panic, or simply stopped having the nightmare where they sink forever. Whether you're three or seventy-three, terrified or just out of practice — I will bring my full attention, my seven years of experience, and my honest belief that you can do this.

Fear of water doesn't disappear with pressure or commands — it disappears with small, repeated experiences of feeling genuinely safe, and I've spent seven years learning exactly how to create that safety for each unique student. Before anyone puts their face in the water, I sit with every new swimmer at the pool's edge and ask quietly: "What's the one thing that worries you most about being in the water?" Whatever they say — drowning, losing control, looking foolish — I take it seriously, and we build a plan that makes that fear feel manageable. For young children and fearful adults, our first lessons might be just sitting on the steps, splashing, blowing bubbles with just the mouth, then the nose, then the whole face for one second at a time. We practice floating on the back with my hand barely touching — close enough to support the moment their eyes go wide but light enough that they start to trust their own buoyancy. For intermediate swimmers who can survive but want real technique, we rebuild freestyle with bilateral breathing that doesn't swallow water, backstroke with proper arm entry, and breaststroke basics. I never push, never grab, never say "just relax" — I just wait, demonstrate, and celebrate every tiny victory. Lessons take place at your local pool — because comfort starts with familiar surroundings.
