About Emily

My admiration for geography is what drove me to complete a degree in Physical geography and Geology at Plymouth University. During my time at university I went on many trips abroad including Spain and Iceland. This gave me first hand experience in 'cold climates' and 'arid climates' which are covered at GCSE and A-Level. I also completed modules in Climate Change, Engineering, Geomorphology and Conservation. I then went on to achieve my PGCE in Geography at Buckingham University and will be wanting to undertake a masters in the future.

During my training I did an additional Pre-PGCE year, which included experience in both teaching and supporting teachers. This along with my completed PGCE year and NQT year, I have gained three years of experience teaching in school. I was trained in London and teach primarily Geography and Religious Studies. I teach geography from year 7-13 and RS from year 7-11, with excellent knowledge of the current curriculum in both subjects. I have attended multiple CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training sessions in paper 1, 2 and 3 for AQA GCSE Geography, along with experience writing lessons and assessments for the humanities department.

I am originally from Cambridge, then moved to London to train and have now settled in Devon. Being a geography teacher, I love the outdoors and feel that examples of what we learn in geography can be found everywhere. My hobbies include collecting, playing and trading pokemon cards, playing board games, hiking and knitting.

About the lesson

When teaching I make it a priority to learn each students needs and abilities though formative and summative assessments, so that I can help each student with any specific areas they struggle with such as knowledge, structure or understanding. In my classroom I believe in a 'Growth Mindset', meaning that I use positive reinforcement to get students curious about learning and create high but realistic expectations and a positive space that encourages a culture of receiving and acting on feedback. This is a key aspect to a students progress, as if they can learn to build on feedback they will start to gain the tools to succeed.
I want students to feel confident in their own abilities and and help them to reach their goals.
