I offer a friendly but educational approach to tutoring which is relaxed yet formative, encouraging students to think critically of what they are being asked to do and the most effective way to go about questions. I myself am a bubbly individual who believes learning is easiest through examples, so I use many case studies to inspire further independent learning for the student. I like to learn what students are struggling to grasp, work through any mind-boggling definitions and further delve into the topic for a richer understanding for those extra marks in the exams. When necessary, I can mark practice exam questions that students have answered to provide feedback, as this enables students to see what examiners look for in their answers and helps portray areas that need further consolidation.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed my interest in Geography initially at school- I had a really engaging teacher who would always ground the physical landscapes we were leaning about in the real world- showing photos of her hikes in really cool places. From then my passion for the outdoors linked well with geography and I went on to study it at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in humans geography- and a particular field called blue humanities which is about how humans are interconnected with the Ocean. I began tutoring whilst at University to support my studies financially and quickly fell in love with the connections and conversations harboured overtime with students as they learn and develop, grow in confidence and ability and also in comfort to have friendly and open conversations with me, tutoring geography isn't just about teaching content, it's about helping students thrive and I really enjoy the dynamic I have been able to foster with many students where they can come to me for advice about difficult dynamics at school with a problematic teacher, to university applications and even friendship advice.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach all levels of geography, national 5, GCSE, Higher, Advanced Higher, A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate and undergraduate level at university. My favourite physical topic is glaciation- as I love when I can go for a hike and physically see the landforms informs of me, and my favourite human topic is much harder to pinpoint as I feel human geography topics blur boundaries, but broadly I'd say globalisation, and sustainability based content.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes- Ms Fletcher, crazy cool geography teacher, x-navy, prior ski-instructor outdoor lover who just made geography make sense in the real world and conveyed why we should care about topics.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Adaptable, friendly, approachable and knowledgeable
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

When learning geography at school I used to struggle with the sheer volume of information which I needed to learn. Geography is undoubtedly a content heavy subject and I used to find this overwhelming, overtime I found a variety of revision techniques to help me learn what I needed to learn- in a manner that it stayed learnt and have been able to share these techniques with students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

The Ocean! From a geographical point of view and from an outdoor enthusiast's point of view. It's an incredibly large volume of water which we rely on for so many ecosystem functions, hosting masses of marine life and areas remain unknown to us, but also I love it as a place to go and do water sports.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am not just a tutor you can learn rigidly from over zoom, I am also a support system.
I make time for my students, even outside of lessons if students have a query or issue they wish to discuss they can send me a message at any time and I will reply as soon as I can. I'm here to support you do the best you can, I don't just want you to do well in geography- I want you to enjoy it!
